Corona shouldn't affect our learning: Samarth, ICFAI
These are first-hand student accounts on how our young population is managing to keep their exam prep or college course work going from the confines of their homes. In case you want to share your lockdown study experience, write to us at publish@shiksha.com.
Every individual is facing a tough time in this pandemic. The whole world is trying to deal with this danger and wants to get rid of it. The industries, government offices, schools & colleges, hospitals, vendors, grocery and vegetable stores are stuck in between this. However, most organisations are following the pattern of work from home. The universities are following the same. Allocating the assignment and projects to the student will ensure that their learning and studies will not be affected.
In our university, at the end of April, semester examinations are to be conducted for various departments. At present, the faculties are providing online study material and assignments to students. In this world of internet, there are various platforms that are helpful to conduct lectures having the facility of face-to-face discussions on the topic and clarifying the doubts by the respective faculty.
The university has recommended these platforms to each faculty to cover the rest of the syllabus. I have been given a weekly assignment (of seven subjects) consisting of 5-10 questions needed to be submitted through a common portal made by the respective faculty member for the whole batch.
To further enhance our learning not just through theory or academics and to keep ourselves engaged, individual projects are being given to us so that apart from books we can improve our technical skills as well. The college has given some credit to these projects too so that students will take this seriously and will work in a disciplined manner. The project coordinator has been assigned and if any student finds difficulty or needs some guidance then they can contact the allotted coordinator between the college hours through suitable means.
All the lectures are being taken by the respective faculty member at a proper schedule and the same is being tracked by the Head of the Department (HOD) and Dean-in charge too.
The practical or the lab work which is credited in the exams are also being conducted through the online platform. However, performing practical is not possible so the theory part is being shared by the faculty in the practical lecture and we are required to prepare for the viva which may take place online(if this condition persists in the future too).
In my opinion, online classes are not so beneficial to students since there are lots of factors that may affect learning. First of all, the internet connection: each one of us may not have the same speed, video quality, etc.
The university is also working for placements by contacting the companies of various fields and guiding the students regarding the same. The students can utilize this precious time for preparation of recruitment by revising the previous subjects, building an impressive resume and many more such things.
