NIT Jalandhar student hangs himself to death in hostel room

A 22-year-old BTech student from Varanasi allegedly committed suicide at his hostel room at Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar.

Pankaj Keshri was doing BTech (textile engineering) from NIT Jalandhar. He left a suicide note in which he mentioned that he was taking the extreme step due to personal compulsions and no one should be blamed for the same.

A 22-year-old BTech student from Varanasi allegedly committed suicide at his hostel room at Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar. Pankaj Keshri was a final-year student of BTech (textile engineering) and allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his hostel room due to “stress”.

The deceased also left a suicide note which read that he failed to succeed, thus, he was taking the decision of ending his life. He mentioned in the suicide note that he was taking the extreme step due to personal compulsions and there’s no one else to be blamed for it.

NIT Jalandhar provides modern amenities with state-of-the-art infrastructure to its students. The facilities of NIT Jalandhar have been updated to the highest standards. The following amenities are offered by NIT Jalandhar:

There are three hostels for girls and ten for boys. Each hostel offers amenities including a reading area, indoor games, washing machines, etc. The majority of hostels offer internet access. All of the hostels include additional amenities, including geysers, water purifiers, and water coolers.

The NIT Jalandhar library is a three-tiered structure that is accessible and occupies 1540 square feet at the centre of all departments.

The NIT Jalandhar sports facilities provide entertainment for their mental and physical health and provide students with the chance to participate in both indoor and outdoor competitions.

Q:   How is the hostel facility at NIT Jalandhar?
A:

NIT Jalandhar offers separate hostel facilities to boys and girls. There are ten boys’ hostels and three girls’ hostels. The facilities of the reading room, indoor games, washing machines etc. are available in each hostel. Internet facility is provided in most of the hostels. Other facilities like geysers, water purifiers and water coolers are provided in all the hostels. Students must effectively use common rooms that contain newspapers, literature, and other materials for indoor games. The hostel warden will set the common room hours on a regular basis.

There are many extra facilities offered by NIT Jalandhar. Some of the facilities are:

Students Activity Centre: It is the nerve cell of all the student activities on campus. The Centre comprises a club building. gymnasium hall, open-air theatre, and hobbies workshop, which cater to various extra-curricular activities of the students.

Technical Club: It functions under "clubs and hobbies activities* of the institute. The objective of the technical club is to bring together faculty and students on a common platform to exchange ideas and share knowledge on emerging technologies.

Book Shop: There is a bookshop situated in the shopping complex of the institute, where a Xerox facility is also available. Additionally, a separate Xerox facility is available in the Library.

Assistant sub-inspector Kulbir Singh of the Maqsudan police station said the body has been handed over to Pankaj’s parents after the postmortem examination. Meanwhile, parents of the deceased said, “The handwriting in the suicide note does not match with that of their son. A case under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been registered,” he added.  

Several incidents of suicides by engineering students have been reported in the past months. The recent case is of IIT Kharagpur where the semi-decomposed body a third-year BTech student from Assam, Faizan Ahmed, was found in his hostel room on October 14. His father had moved the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) after which the Calcutta High Court directed the police to submit a report on the investigation into the death of Faizan Ahmed.
