Tripura University started as a Post-Graduate Wing of Calcutta University in 1976 and then became a full-fledged state university in 1987. In 2007, Tripura University became the Central University. At present, there are forty-four departments, two faculties, and four Centres of Study along with the four departments under the Directorate of Distance Education. Central University of Tripura is accredited with B++ Grade by NAAC. Tripura Central University offers 114 programmes. Out of the total courses provided by the university, 41 are PhD courses, 60 are PG courses, 7 are UG courses, and 6 are Postgraduate Diploma courses. These courses are provided across the Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and various other streams.
