Maharaja Sayajirao University

In a major relaxation for students, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, authorities have decided to drop the rule of making Aadhaar Cards mandatory document for admissions. The decision to withdraw the rule was taken after Principal Secretary (Higher and Technical Education) Anju Sharma’s intervention.

Earlier, the authorities had issued a notice announcing Aadhaar Card as a mandatory document required for admission from this academic session.

But following requests by students from the Northeast and foreign countries, who faced difficulty in seeking admission in absence of Aadhaar Card, the authorities deliberated upon the issue and arrived at the decision.

According to reports, the Aadhaar Card was made mandatory following a circular by issued by the government.

“The UGC has already been insisting on making Aadhaar compulsory. It makes it easier to transfer scholarships and refunds to the account of the students,” MSU registrar Neerja Jaiswal told a leading daily.

However, Principal Secretary (Higher and Technical Education) Anju Sharma denied any such circular by the government.

“There is no such directive from the government for any technical or non-technical institution," she was quoted as saying.

When she was informed that the university had announced the directive, Sharma asked Vice Chancellor Parimal Vyas to withdraw the rule, directing the authorities to ensure the no one is denied admission in case of absence of Aadhaar Cards.

Vyas has already directed admission officials to withdraw the mandatory Aadhar Card rule.

“We had enforced the rule in accordance with a UCG circular stating that Aadhaar must be made mandatory in universities. However, after receiving a directive from Principal Secretary Sharma, I have asked my officer to withdraw the rule. We had trouble with some students from the Northeast due to this,” Vyas was quoted as saying.
