AAT Section-wise Preparation Strategy

The Ashoka Aptitude Test is a highly competitive entrance exam. Candidates appearing for the exam need to have a strategy to score well and qualify. Here's a section-wise prep strategy for AAT 2026.

1. Logical Reasoning (25 Questions)

This is the highest-weightage section in the test. Topics include blood relations, seating arrangements, direction sense, syllogisms, coding-decoding, and number/letter series.

Strategy:

  • Solve at least 20-25 reasoning puzzles daily.
  • Practice seating arrangements and blood relation questions under timed conditions.
  • Use elimination as your primary technique for multi-statement syllogism questions.
  • Review questions from previous AAT slots, as repetition of questions is very common.

2. Verbal Aptitude (25 Questions)

The verbal section tests grammar, vocabulary in context, sentence completion, synonyms/antonyms, and reading comprehension. It does not test advanced literature knowledge.

Strategy:

  • Read one editorial daily from publications: The Hindu, Indian Express, or The Economist.
  • Practice fill-in-the-blank and sentence correction questions from RS Aggarwal's verbal reasoning book.
  • For reading comprehension, always read the questions first, then the passage to save time and improve accuracy.
  • Focus on commonly confused words (affect/effect, imply/infer, fewer/less) as these are mostly asked in AAT.,

3. Quantitative Aptitude (20 Questions)

The quantitative section covers concepts up to Grade X level. Advanced calculus or trigonometry beyond basics is not tested.

Key topics: percentages, profit & loss, HCF & LCM, averages, ratios, time-speed-distance, time & work, SI & CI, permutation & combination, and basic geometry.
Strategy:

  • Create a formula sheet for each topic and revise it daily for the first two weeks.
  • Solve 10 to 15 quant problems daily, mixing easy and moderate difficulty.
  • Avoid spending more than 90 seconds on any single question during timed practice.
  • For permutation & combination and probability, focus on understanding the concept rather than memorising formulas.

4. Data Interpretation (5 Questions)

DI can be answered quickly if you are comfortable reading charts and tables. You will encounter bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, and tabular data.
Strategy:

  • Practice calculating percentages and ratios mentally
  • Avoid long written calculations under exam pressure.
  • In DI sets, read all questions before analysing the data. Many questions share the same calculation step.
  • Practise 2-3 DI sets daily from any MBA/CAT foundation-level resource.

5. On-the-Spot Essay

The essay section evaluates how clearly and logically you can express an opinion. There is no predefined topic. Prompts are typically introspective, socio-political, or opinion-based.
Strategy:

  • Practise writing a 250-300 word structured essay in under 20 minutes, three to four times a week.
  • Follow the structure for essay writing: Claim → Evidence/Example → Counterpoint → Conclusion.
  • Review your Ashoka application essays.
  • Avoid extremely difficult language.
