Delhi HC dismisses plea of a candidate seeking admission in DU

Dismissing a plea submitted by a law course aspirant, Delhi High Court has ruled that candidates who secure a valid rank in an entrance exam but fail to present proper documents at the time of counselling can be denied admission by the university.

The plea was filed by a student, Bhim Shankar Thakur who was seeking admission at Delhi University (DU) in LLB course for the academic session, 2016-17. Thakur had appeared for the LLB entrance exam and secured 767 rank in OBC category. He was called for the counselling session on August 22, 2016 where he could not produce his original graduation certificate.

Thakur graduated in the year, 2012 but did not collect the degree from his college. After he was denied DU admissions, Thakur collected his degree on September 8, 2016 from the university at Meerut. After completion of DU counselling, when Thakur approached the varsity for submission of his degree certificate the university did not accept it.

According to the lawyer of the candidate, he was not in a position to present any proof that the university from where Thakur completed his graduation had not issued the degree till the time of counselling.

However, Delhi HC was not convinced with the argument and stated in its verdict that a degree not collected from a university is not equal to a degree not issued by a university. Also, the court stated that it is mandatory for aspirants to appear for the counselling session with all their original documents. Failing to present the documents can result in rejection of admission by the university.
