Mystory@Harshit Chauhan: How I selected my college & prep tips for law entrance exam
As a History graduate I always had my fair share of interest in Indian modern history. Framing of the Indian Constitution and legal developments in the post independence period always attracted my attention. It was then that I realised that my real interest lies in Law.
Every Law aspirant must bear in mind that Law will become a part of your life. It's not easy to be a successful lawyer if you're not devoted. One semester into law school and I realised that it's not a subject but a lifestyle. You have to be sincere with your efforts and be ready to invest time.
Fortunately, my law school experience has been great so far. The biggest dilemma that I faced was about how to pick the right law school. I cleared multiple entrance exams including the prestigious DU LLB, BHU CET, Bhartiya Vidayapeeth Pune and few others with decent ranks and was getting into all of them in the first round of counselling. The decision to pick the right law school was even tougher than the process of preparing for and clearing the exams. I visited campuses of various law schools and tried to contact the students who were already enrolled in the particular schools for reviews.
I finalised Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, after much deliberation but due to some unavoidable circumstances the admission process was delayed. Meanwhile I came across the scholarship program of Jindal Global Law School. Jindal Global Law School is undoubtedly one of the best colleges in the country imparting legal knowledge to brilliant minds. I was sure that I will get into the college because of my decent scores but it was quite expensive and I didn't want to burden my parents financially. I visited the campus and met the people concerned with admissions. To my surprise I met the eligibility criteria for Savitri Jindal Scholarship which meant 75% scholarship on my academic fee. I made up my mind that very moment to join the school because the kind of opportunities which the university provided is unmatched in the country as far as 3-year LL.B program is concerned.
Tips for Cracking Law Entrance Exam
Law education in India basically revolves around CLAT exam that is conducted by a particular NLU every year. Thousands of students compete to get into a reputed college throughout the country and most colleges approve this to be the standard test for admission. However, very few students in the country opt for a 3-year law programme and the most prestigious exam for 3-year law aspirants in India remains the DU LLB test conducted by University of Delhi each year for admission to Faculty of Law. The exam is challenging in its own way because the aspirants are mature and are very serious about their goals. Also, because they have already completed their graduation, the exam checks their proficiency to take up Law.
The exam basically revolves around basic legal concepts like torts and constitution. Current affairs are very important while preparing for DU LLB exam as a majority of questions are expected from current global and national affairs and the Indian Constitution. One has to be aware of recent Supreme Court judgments and legal issues in news.
Preparing for the exam is no easy task. My preparation picked up pace during the last semester of my graduation. It's very hectic to maintain a balance between college and preparing for the exam. I decided to prepare on my own and thus the weapon of my choice was the SS Singhal Guide for DU LLB exam which covers practically every aspect of the exam. I also made sure that I follow the news on a regular basis. I promised to devote two hours daily practicing sample papers and taking up mock tests. A number of websites also help students by providing mock tests at affordable rates and which are very helpful as you can analyse where you stand in the crowd. One also has to practice maths because questions from basic mathematics can affect your rank as the exam is highly competitive. I made the same mistake which most final students usually make, which is to focus too much on their college exams and keep the entrance preparations on hold. I personally advise such students to devote at least one hour on a daily basis so that you're in constant touch with the topics. The exam is usually conducted in May or June thus giving students ample time after their college exams to revise and prepare well for the exam. I personally worked very hard during that particular period while others were busy enjoying their vacation and I think I owe my success to that hard work.
To every aspirant who wants to be part of the legal fraternity, I've only one suggestion. Every day when you wake up, have only one goal. To "Seize the Day". Be patient and good thing will follow.
