IIM Ahmedabad seeks funds from alumni, corporates to restore its heritage campus

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has reached out to its alumni for help in restoring its heritage campus. They are also seeking funds from corporate houses for restoration and conservation of The Louis Kahn Campus building which is home to Louis Kahn Plaza, library, a faculty wing and 18 dormitories. The premiere institute was designed by American architect Louis Kahn about fifty years ago.
IIMA announced on Thursday that the institute will raise funds for restoration purpose and has invited alumni and corporates to make contributions, big or small, towards it. The contribution will be recognized through a trust.
"We want to raise resources for classrooms and dorms and administrative blocks and for faculty complex and we are reaching out to alumni and corporates for each of these parts of the campus and we are trying to come up with a mechanism so that even smaller contributions can be made, and we would recognize the contribution made through some kind of trust", said professor Rakesh Basant, dean (alumni and external relations).
The heritage building was damaged in the earthquake that struck Gujarat in 2001. The aim of restoration is to restore the original structure of the building while making it disabled friendly.
Three years ago, IIMA had asked its board members to donate for the renovation and conservation of the building after the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) recognised the campus’ restoration as a task for "protection of national heritage, art and culture, including restoration of sights of historical importance as well as promoting education."
And now, it has asked alumni and corporates to join hands for restoring the iconic building.
The restoration and conservation work will cost about Rs 130 crore, Rs 30 crore of which has been raised already. According to a report, work on library and one of the dormitories is underway.
"The process of conserving and restoring will be more challenging now in the short run. We are convinced that in the long run this is clearly nurturing an asset that the institute will be very proud of and Indian society will be very happy about", said professor Ashish Nanda, director of IIMA.
