Last month preparation strategy for MAT 2020
By: Vignesh Balakrishnan
Effective prioritization of topics, consistent mock test attempts, ideally balancing the effort into smart work and allocation of time slots to various sections are some of the key strategies for a successful last month preparation.
The eleventh-hour preparation is an exciting and fun-filled erudition technique and may mean differently to different people. It is probably the last possible moment or opportunity to give the best shot in an exam.
The last month of intensive preparation is crucial and involves taking multiple mock tests, watching lecture series and keeping things in the right perspective. The main thing to be remembered is to focus on what is your strength rather than messing with negativity conducive environment.
Last-Minute Preparation Strategies
- Avoid Adventure: Venturing into unknown and weak topics must be avoided at all costs. This would lead to procrastination of time and energy. Instead, focusing on your core strength areas would have a direct impact on the effective preparation
- Time Management: Time is a valuable asset and should be respected at all costs. Setting up a study schedule for the preparation process would surely help. Mere drafting of schedule will not help; it must be adhered to at all costs.
- Rigorous Mock Tests: The real value addition for preparation takes form only if you attempt a continuous series of mock tests. It substantiates the subject preparation and gives deeper insights on the pattern, difficulty level and diversity of questions. Solving the previous year question paper also adds great value to the preparation.
- Smart Work: Effective preparation is possible only through smart work. There are subjects, which you must learn and some other concepts, which need mugging-up. Moreover, there will be a series of concepts that you feel difficult and skip. Smart Work is concerned with ideally balancing these dimensions.
- Note Making: Always follow a habit of note-making. It is a great boon to last-minute revision. This is highly subjective and can vary with each person. There is no standard procedure but making notes of difficult or confusing concepts would always prove beneficial in the preparation process. It aids revision and provides clarity during the critical period.
Tips to Improve the Score
Improving scores are a sort of complex process and must have effective preparation as a prerequisite. It is again highly subjective and depends upon the knowledge and logical aptitude of a candidate. However, certain points need careful consideration to improve your score in MAT:
- Always start with the section that you feel is more difficult. Allocate proper time in solving the difficult section
- Data Analysis & Sufficiency and Intelligence & Critical Reasoning are sections having a high scoring probability
- Language Comprehension is balanced. It absolutely depends upon your verbal skills and command over the language. It is usually easy but some questions may pose a tough time
- Mathematical Skills section is considered to be the trickiest section. Questions must be attempted diligently and with confidence
- Indian and Global Environment purely tests your general awareness of national and international issues. This section is optional, as it is not taken into account for percentile calculation. However, some universities may ask for a minimum score in this section too. So, it is better to attempt it with the least time
- Since the total available time is 150 minutes, ideally 30 minutes can be spent on each section and extra care can be given towards the Quants Section
- For every wrong answer, 0.25 marks are deducted. Therefore, it is highly important to attempt questions that you are totally confident about
- Do not waste time sitting on a single question. Though you are capable of cracking the answer, it consumes a commendable time. It may lead to leaving out other questions that you are confident enough of cracking
- Speed up your calculation and if possible, learn certain basic calculation tricks beforehand
- Always keep a track of time and ensure that it is followed as per your plan
- Finally, do not stress out. It directly affects your answers. Be calm and relaxed while solving the questions
