1 min readUpdated on Nov 22, 2019 14:12 IST

Kumar shares a comparative analysis between Common Admission Test (CAT) 2018 and CAT 2019.

  • Exam pattern: In 2018, the exam pattern was quite simple when compared to CAT 2019. This year's exam pattern is complex. This year, the board has introduced one new section that is Non-MCQ (multiple-choice questions) section, which is non-penalty.
  • Difficulty level: Last year IIM-Calcutta conducted the test on November 25 in two slots. According to experts, the first slot with questions from Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), were not so tough. CAT 2018 had shorter DILR questions. Out of all three sections, questions from Quantitative Ability was the toughest. Most of the questions were directly from Arithmetic. If you had scored 48 to 50 in DILR then you would be able to get 99 percentile in that particular section, 44 to 50 in Quantitative Ability then you would be able to get 99 percentile in that particular section and in Verbal Ability if you scored at least 75 then 99 percentile would easily achievable in that section. So, overall if you had scored 155 to 160 score then you would have got 99 percentile. According to the aspirant who had given the examination of 2018 in the first slot, were telling that Quantitative Ability section was tougher and Verbal Ability and reading comparison section was more scoring. Compared to slot one, slot two was difficult. In slot 2, for 99 percentile score in all the three sections were the same.
  • Question type: In slot 1, for quantitative ability, questions included Number System (2), Algebra (8), Arithmetic Mean (14), Modern Math (3), Geometry and Mensuration (7).
