Vacancy of 40,000 posts in defence ministry: Central Government

The Defence Ministry has 34, 289 and 3,782 vacant posts for group B and group A officers, respectively. There are over 2 lakh vacancies in several other categories in the ministry, as per the Minister of State for Defence.

In a recent statement issued in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Defence - Shripad Naik informed that the Defence Ministry has 34, 289 and 3,782 vacant posts for group B and group A officers, respectively. There are over 2 lakh vacancies in several other categories in the ministry, as per the Minister of State for Defence. He further informed that there are 425 vacancies for posts of officers in Air Force, 1,500 vacancies for posts of officers in the Indian Navy and 6,867 vacancies for posts of officers in the Indian Army. He said in written while answering to a question in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Indian parliament.

He informed the Rajya Sabha that there are 36,517 vacancies for the post of junior commissioned officers and other ranks in the Indian Army. He further informed that 10,425 posts of airmen and 15,590 posts of sailors are vacant in the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy respectively. As per his statement, the government had taken several measures to decrease the shortages. Some of those measures included publicity campaign, sustained image projection and participation in career fairs & exhibitions. These measures would help create awareness among the youth on the benefits of taking up a challenging and satisfying career.

This information came on the backdrop of the accusations made by many opposition parties that the government is not taking measures to increase employment in the country. The employment rate in the public, as well as private sector, is facing an all-time low, going by many national and international reports.
