UPSC Tie Resolution Principle
There are various cases where the final marks of two or more candidates are equal. For those cases, UPSC has the tie-resolution principle. The UPSC gave preference to the candidate where
1. The aggregate marks of compulsory papers and personality test is higher.
2. Age of the candidate
It implies that if two candidates have the same marks then UPSC will compare the aggregate marks secured in the General Studies Paper of the IAS Main (written) exam and the marks secured in the personality test. The candidates having higher aggregate will have a better rank in the UPSC topper list.

In case, the candidates have equal marks even in the above aggregate, the candidate who is older will be given preference in rank.
