Candidates with a valid score in the following exams: UGC NET/ CSIR NET/ JEST (or) GATE are eligible for the PhD at  the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. Candidates must apply through the institute's official website. IIST offers PhD in regular, sponsored, and anytime mode. Specialisations covered under PhD are Aerospace engineering, Avionics, earth & Space Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Humanitites.

Admission to the IIIT Delhi PhD programmes is merit and entrance-based. Shortlisted candidates have to go through an interview round for final selection. The accepted entrance exams are GATE/ UGC NET/CSIR NET. Based on the candidates' scores in the accepted exam, the candidates are shortlisted. For some of the PhD programmes, aspirants are shortlisted for the interview based on aggregate in the last qualifying examination.
