Cleared NATA? Here’s Why Students Should Explore Both Architecture and Urban Design Before Choosing Their Path

Congratulations on clearing NATA. That’s the entry into a future where students can design buildings, cities, and public spaces that truly matter.
Most students associate NATA purely with the Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch). That’s understandable; it’s a classic, well-known profession. But there’s a 2nd path, often overlooked but incredibly applicable: the Bachelor of Urban Design (BUD).
This program isn't just about single buildings; it’s about entire cities, neighbourhoods, and the systems that keep them running. Understanding both pathways in some depth can help students make a more informed and future-ready choice.

Two ways to shape the built world

Architecture and urban design both deal with the built environment, but the scale is different. Architecture is about the individual structures, homes, schools, and offices. It’s a mix of creative flair and technical grit, needing an understanding of materials, construction, and environmental performance. Plus, it’s a licensed profession in India, which offers a very clear, structured career ladder.
Urban design, however, zooms out. It’s about how a city breathes. It's about streets, transport, and how people interact in public spaces. It’s where design meets real-world mobility and sustainability.
Think of it this way: architects design the buildings, but urban designers decide how those buildings fit into the fabric of the city. Both are essential, and they’re deeply intertwined.

What is actually studied?

The difference becomes clearer when looking at what students actually learn.
  •  A B.Arch program is usually of five years and focuses heavily on design studios. Students learn to design buildings, understand structures, work with materials, and follow building regulations. They also study environmental design, the history of architecture, and professional practice.
  • A Bachelor of Urban Design (BUD) program is also five years, but shifts the lens to cities. Expect projects on streetscapes and public squares. Students dive into mapping, mobility planning, and environmental analysis. There’s also more fieldwork; students will be out in real communities, seeing how design impacts daily life.

Career opportunities are expanding

Both fields offer strong and evolving career options.
  • Architecture graduates typically work in architectural firms, real estate, design consultancies, or start their own practice. Some move into specialised areas like sustainable design, conservation, or digital architecture.
  • Urban design graduates find roles in urban planning firms, infrastructure projects, mobility planning, public space design, and policy-related work. With cities becoming more complex, there is a growing demand for professionals who can think at a systems level. Importantly, many projects today require both architects and urban designers to work together.

Why this matters now

The context in which students are choosing their careers is also changing. India is on track to add 400 million people to its cities in the coming decades. That is a staggering need for housing, transport, and livable spaces.
At the same time, the push for climate-responsive "green" buildings is no longer optional; it's a necessity. This means the future is not just about designing individual buildings, but also about understanding how cities work as a whole.

New academic options are emerging

Until recently, undergraduate urban design was mostly an international option. That’s changing. Institutions like CEPT University in Ahmedabad have been ahead of the curve, offering a dedicated Bachelor’s in Urban Design program for over a decade alongside their famous B.Arch. For students, this means the choice after NATA is no longer limited to a single, familiar path, but includes a wider set of possibilities within the built environment.

How to choose

The decision is not about which field is better, but about what suits the students.
If they are interested in designing buildings, working with form and materials, and eventually becoming a licensed professional, B.Arch. is a strong choice. If they are curious about cities, public spaces, transport systems, and how large-scale environments function, BUD might be a better fit. Both paths require creativity, hard work, and a willingness to engage with real-world problems.

A more informed decision

Clearing NATA opens the door to multiple possibilities, not just one.
Taking the time to understand both architecture and urban design can help students make a more confident and informed decision, one that aligns with their interests and the kind of impact they want to create. As cities continue to grow and change, the need for thoughtful design, at every scale, will only increase.
For the Bachelor of Urban Design program, students can apply using NATA scores or JEE Main Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning) exam results.
