The university is established and incorporated by the Government of Uttarakhand and is recognized by the University Grants Commission.

In 2016, the Uttarakhand government created Himalayan Garhwal University (HGU), Pauri. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved of it. The eight faculties that fall under the purview of HGU Pauri's administration are:
