Thapar University offers both MTech and ME courses in regular and flexible modes. In regular mode, the course is two years, divided into four semesters. Further, in the flexible mode, the duration of a programme leading to the ME/ MTech degree in flexible timings mode shall be five to six semesters. The basic eligibility criteria required to get admission into MTech at Thapar University are that candidates must complete their BE/ BTech/ BSc/ MSc degree in a relevant stream with a minimum aggregate of 60% (55% for SC/ST/Industry sponsored).
Note: If MSc is the qualifying exam, vacant seats (if any) will be filled based on merit, with 50% weightage to BSc marks and 50% to MSc marks (up to the pre-final year)
Thapar University ME/ MTech courses are available in several specialisations, such as ME Mechanical Engineering, ME Structural Engineering, ME Computer Science and Engineering, MTech Biotechnology, MTech Environmental Sciences & Technology, etc. The eligibility criteria to enroll in these specialisations differs from specialisation to specialisation, for example- if candidates want to get admission into MTech in Biotechnology, they must complete BE/ BTech degree in Biotechnology/ Chemical Engineering/ Industrial Biotechnology/ Biochemical Engineering OR MSc Degree in Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Microbiology/ Bio-Physics/ Biology/ Botany/ Zoology/ Genetics/ MBBS/ MSc (Ag) & MVSc.
Thapar University MTech admission is based on candidates' achieved scores in GATE, followed by an interview/ counselling. The university also offers merit-based admissions on the basis of their last qualifying scores. However, the preference is always given to GATE qualified candidates.

The TIET MTech application process is conducted via online and offline modes. For online mode, students must register via the official website of Thapar University. A step-by-step process is mentioned below:
Step 1.1: Visit the official website of the university, www.thapar.edu.
Step 1.2: Click on 'Admission 2025' and register yourself.
Step 1.3: Fill out the application form by entering the required academic and personal details.
Step 1.4: Upload a scanned photo of the qualifying exam mark sheet and a passport-size photograph.
Step 1.5: Pay the Thapar University MTech application fee, i.e., INR 1,500, online via debit/ credit card or can be paid through DD.
Note: Candidates having any pending backlog in the qualifying degree (graduation) shall not be considered for admission.
Firstly, for admission, the university shortlists the candidates based on their obtained scores in the GATE. Further, for some specialisations or candidates who are admitted based on their last qualifying scores, the university shortlists the applicants based on their last qualifying scores for available seats. After shortlisting the competent candidates, the university releases the merit list.
The admission committee will call the candidate for verification of documents. Admission will be provided to all the shortlisted candidates on the basis of merit until the seat vacancy exists. However, the first preference for the counselling round/ interview process is given to GATE-qualified candidates. It is suggested to candidates that they visit the website and their registered email ID regularly to track the counselling schedule.
Note: In all rounds of counselling, the GATE-qualified candidates shall get first preference based on their merit. Those who missed the earlier round can attend any counselling held later but their admission will be on merit & subject to availability of seat.
To confirm the seat in the programme, candidates are required to pay a certain amount of Thapar University MTech fees.
The Thapar University regular mode MTech course is available in two years, divided into four semesters. Moreover, for the MTech flexible mode, the course is divided into three years and can be completed in five to six semesters.
