We help students understand the culture, traditions and challenges of modern life, says Anthropology Professor

In a conversation with Shiksha.com, Vellore Institute of Technology, Andhra Pradesh, Anthropology Professor Madhulika talks about the teaching methodology the institute adopts for its BBA programme. She explains that the methodology is experimental and focuses on higher-order thinking. Madhulika believes in learning beyond classroom boundaries and hence, their students undergo live projects on fields so they can put their theoretical skills into practice. She is a trained Anthropologist having diverse experience in academics, research and fieldwork. Her research interest includes Ethnography, Social Anthropology, Forced Migration and Tribal Development. She has also worked with different tribal communities across India.

Read the excerpts of the interview below:

Q: What are the salient features of the teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?

A: I teach Anthropology, Gender Studies and Qualitative Research Methods to BBA and BTech students at VIT-AP University. In VIT-AP School of Business (VSB) we offer unique liberal arts and STEM courses as a foundation for BBA. Subjects such as Anthropology, Psychology, Critical Thinking, Contemporary Indian English Literature along with environmental studies, statistics, economics, Python and so on, have really helped my students to understand multiple realities of real-world problems. This helped students to nurture their thinking by relating to different subjects.

One of the interesting methodologies adopted by VSB faculty members in VSB is experiential teaching methodology and focus on higher-order thinking. Students do many assignments and projects, where they apply theoretical concepts to real-life issues. Some of my students have conducted ethnography fieldwork with Toy making communities in Kondapalli, Cotton weavers in Mangalagiri, and Ponchampally weavers in Hyderabad. These helped the students to understand the culture and traditions and challenges of modern life in these communities. Later, students organised an exhibition of unique findings in the university and got feedback from other faculty members.  This kind of training helps students to develop their communication as well as people and analytical skills.  This also enables students to synthesise knowledge and concepts from several disciplines and come up with new ideas to real-world problems.

The teaching methodology we use here in the university is different from other business schools. As faculty members, we spend maximum time with students as a mentor to overcome their academic challenges.

Q: How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?

A: Students are given rigorous training in the form of workshops and guest lectures with resource persons coming from top companies, universities, IIMs, and government and non-government organisations. One of the biggest achievements by my students is getting paid internship offers from eminent companies in their 1st year’s summer vacation. Furthermore, the summer projects in fieldwork with different communities helped many students to develop interesting business models to start new businesses. One of my students worked on the food habits of locals in Tuni (Andhra Pradesh) which has helped him to start his own restaurant in his hometown.

The rigours of the practical approach to work with the communities and going out of comfort zones on topics that interest students have helped many to prepare themselves for the industry.

The students participate in various extra-curricular and co-curricular activities and volunteer in organising these events from which they learn teamwork, leadership, crisis management, professionalism, business orientation, and planning and execution.

Q: What are the qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?

A: The qualities we are looking for in student applicants are motivation, determination to learn out of comfort zone, learning for life and not for jobs. Students pursuing high school or equivalent can apply. We prefer candidates who are curious, self-motivated and open to learning.

To do well in my course, they should be willing to take up challenges working with unexplored or unknown communities and doing something innovative. Subjects such as anthropology and gender studies can be best understood and internalised if students work on the topics in real-world problems and apply the concepts they learned in the classroom.

Q: How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirements?

A: The course curriculum is prepared based on the industry requirements and benchmarked against the best universities in Indian and the world. Our curriculum and syllabus are approved by the University of Michigan, Dearborn (UMD) USA. Our Board of Studies includes experts from industry and professors from IIMs, especially those who have experience in liberal arts and contemporary management subjects. We have speakers from industry visiting to interact with our students and faculty. This helps our faculty to understand the industry expectations and fine-tune the syllabus, pedagogy and assignments/projects.

Q: Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science & entrepreneurship? How? Could you cite some examples of these?

A: VIT-AP University indeed is receptive to innovation, technology, science and entrepreneurship.

BBA curriculum includes STEM subjects. Innovative ideas are incubated by the university, where students can develop the prototype and fine-tune the business model and start the business. BBA students and B Tech students can collaborate for coming with new products that are viable and have market potential.  VSB organise a number of workshops to prepare them to manage well in the jobs, choose job or start startups in a righteous manner.

Absolutely satisfied with the facilities and their records.

Faculty: The professors who teach in this college are very knowledgeable, and they are very friendly with the students. However, some of them are not as friendly due to personal issues. The curriculum of the college is useful for future purposes, and you can adjust your own timetable. The difficulty of the exams varies with the semester and slot-wise.

Absolutely satisfied with their records and facilities.

Faculty: All professors are very knowledgeable, but some of them don't show interest in showing their skills because of their personal issues. But some of them are very helpful and friendly with students. The curriculum provided by the college is good, selecting faculty members and running clubs as a president and dean. It is very helpful for further purposes. The difficulty of the examination may vary with every semester, but we can say it lies between the moderate level.

Satisfied with this college while comparing with other colleges.

Faculty: he curriculum of this university is not like a normal B.Tech college. It is better than other B.Tech colleges in Andhra Pradesh. Every college doesn't fail to have top-notch faculty, we have to search for it, as it is common for all private colleges. We face some issues with the difficulty of semester exams. The college runs with relatively strict grading, so we have to be at the top of the section.

Worthy for EAMCET students.

Faculty: Teachers who are professors are very capable. Some of the faculty may be strict, but every faculty member has a good knowledge in their field. Difficulty in semester exams is moderate, not all questions are easy, but some are tough, most questions are standard, and the invigilation is strict in a way that makes malpractice impossible.

Faculty: Faculty members are very good in teaching. They are approachable to students and friendly. They are very knowledgeable. Teaching is good. In semester, we have conducted two mid exams and a final exam. The pass percentage of exams is 40 percent. If we get 40 percent of marks in the final exam, only then we will pass the entire semester.

I hate this organisation.

Faculty: Exams are fine, not too hard and not too easy. There are some awesome faculty members, but some are not good enough. They are too strict, stubborn, and hot-headed. They do not even want to understand problems of students, which is quite frustrating.

The highest package last year was around 50 lakhs. College is good when compared to others.

Faculty: Faculty is just above average. Their teaching is not up to the mark. Some of them teach very well, and some of them are worse, so it all depends on the faculty you choose. The curriculum is quite good for students, and exams are conducted semester-wise. Overall, we have a flexible schedule.

College is very good with decent placements, decent curriculum, and infrastructure.

Faculty: The faculty here is very good. Their teaching is good, and most of the faculty are from IITs and NITs. Their teaching style is understandable to everyone. The curriculum is very good, it's designed in such a way that it's helpful to students, as exams are conducted semester-wise.

Review of VIT Andhra Pradesh University.

Faculty: The teachers are helpful, qualified, and knowledgeable. The teaching quality depends on some faculty members, it means that some faculty members' teaching quality is good, and some teaching quality is not good. The course curriculum is relevant, and it makes the students industry-ready. Semester exams are difficult in this college, and the pass percentage is not accurate, but expected to be 35 percent.

This M.Tech course is very beautiful and very understandable. They provide industry level training. The exams are so much easier for me. I study only one day before the exams. I have passed every exam till now. The students' pass percentage is 96 percent.

Faculty: =Most of the faculty members are good. All are post graduate and Ph.D. holders. Some of them are not good at explaining, and they will not be sure whether most of the students got the topic or not. On average, the good teacher count is high. Each sem has 2 midterms, and one sem exam and the study curriculum will be good but the syllabus will be covered very quickly, as it is dependent on the faculty.

Faculty: Teachers are very professional in their teaching. They came to class to teach their subject. If we have any doubts, we can go to their cabins in their free time. We have a separate mentor allotted to every student. I really like this course very much. This is relevant to industries as well as software companies. We have two mid exams and one semester for half a year. So, a total of 4 mid and 2 sem exams for a year. Its not very difficult.

Satisfied regarding infrastructure and events, but fees are somewhat high.

Faculty: With respect to the curriculum, this is the best college. In our hands, we can create your own timetable and respective slots. Faculty are very professional and helpful, very friendly with students. Difficult level of exam, we can't say because some students in some slots can get moderate papers, and in other slots they get hard.

Faculty: Nice and knowledgeable faculty, good in teaching, and well experienced. The curriculum is moderate. There are 8 semesters in this college, and the pass percentage is 40 percent. Attendance should be higher than 75 percent, only then can we write the exam.
