In a conversation with Shiksha.com, the experts at K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering talk in details about their Somaiya Entrance Test for Engineering (SET-E) exam. They elaborate on the eligibility criteria, the exam pattern, mock test papers and important date timelines related to the exam. As we all are sailing through the difficult time of the global pandemic, the institute has decided to conduct the exam online in a proctored environment. A valid score in SET-E exam makes a student eligible for admission to all BTech courses at KJ Somaiya College of Engineering.

Q: Can you briefly tell us what SET-E exam is all about?

A: Somaiya Entrance Test for Engineering (SET-E) is the entrance test for admission to First Year BTech engineering programmes. It is one of the entrance examinations for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at Somaiya Engineering College. This entrance test will not have any negative marking.

Q: What is the eligibility criteria that one must fulfil to appear for this exam?

A: To be eligible for SET-E exam, an applicant must have a minimum aggregate of 50 per cent in Class 12 exams conducted by any recognised or state boards such as Central Board of Secondary Education, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, or equivalent.

Q: What is the exam pattern and what kind of questions are asked in the exam?

A: Somaiya Entrance Test for Engineering (SET-E) is an English-based exam consisting of three sections-

  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

All the sections have 25 questions each with the Mathematics section having all questions of two marks each. Physics and Chemistry sections have all questions of one mark each which makes it a total of 100 marks question paper.

Students are allowed a time limit of 90 minutes to complete the exam.

The mock test papers are available online on the Institute’s official website. Students’ willing to practice may refer to those mock test papers.

Q: Is it the same exam for admission to post-graduate engineering programmes?

A: No, KJ Somaiya College of Engineering conducts two exams:

  1. Somaiya Entrance Test for Engineering (SET-E) for admission to BTech Programmes such as Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanica Engineering
  2. Somaiya Post Graduate Entrance Exam in Engineering (SPG-E) for admission to MTech Programmes such as Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology (with specialisation in Information Security), Mechanica Engineering (with specialisation in CAD, CAM and Robotics) and Interdisciplinary Programme in Energy Engineering

Q: What are the important dates related to the SET-E exam 2020?

A: The last date to fill up the online application form is July 8, 2020. The applicants will get their login ID and passwords to attempt the test on July 20. The tentative exam date is July 25, however, the date may change due to outbreak of Coronavirus.

Q: As the exam is going to be conducted amid the global pandemic, what precautions have you taken for the security of the applicants?

A: As an institute, it’s our first and foremost priority to be concerned about our students’ safety. So, this year, we have planned to conduct the exam online in a proctored environment. Aspiring candidates need not travel to any exam centre, rather they can take up the exam from their home.

Q: Is there any application fee to be paid for this exam? And, what is the course fee for the BTech programme?

A: Yes, there is an application fee of Rs 2,000 and SET-E examination fee of Rs 2,000 to be paid by the student at the time of filling up the online application form.

The cost of the four year BTech programme is Rs 2.86 lakh per year.

Q: What is total student intake in each of the BTech branch?

A: The total student intake in each of the BTech branch in 120. There is no management quota.

Yes, you can get admission to K J Somaiya School of Engineering for MTech without GATE . You can opt for other entrance exams, such as CUET and PERA CET, and if  you pass these exams, you would then be required to present your documents to prove your eligibility for admission.
