LU now a part of Namami Gange

The Earth Science Research Centre was recently opened at Lucknow University. The centre will now contribute to Namami Gange, PM Modi’s Ganges river clean-up programme. By doing so, LU and its centre will be a part of UP’s Vikas Sankalp Patra 2017, which will cover river science.

The centre has been established under the Institute of Geo-resources, ONGC Centre of Advanced Studies. Three new programmes inclusive of the Earth Science Research Centre have been announced by LU. These programmes will enable the students and faculty to be a part of the Ganges clean-up drive.

Prof Dhruv Sen Singh, director of the institute, told a leading daily, “The courses are designed to cater to several branches of geoscience, giving opportunities to students to be absorbed in organisations in India and abroad.”

The approval was given in June 2014 and a budget of Rs 20,000 Crore was provided to accomplish the two objectives, one being effective reduction of pollution, and the second being rejuvenation of the Ganges.

The other two courses launched in LU under the Institute of Geo-resources, ONGC Centre of Advanced Studies are:

  • MSc in applied geology (with specialisation in petroleum geoscience)
  • PG diploma in exploration, resources and mining technology

These courses have been designed keeping in mind the present scenarios and the prospects of the future. Adding to this, SP Singh, LU vice chancellor told a leading daily, “These courses will aim at developing human resources to strengthen the nation, for the present and future requirement, at par with international standards.”

LU has already received the support consent of numerous national and international, private and public sector organisations like ONGC Videsh ONGC, ACL Norway and BMRC Dubai to name just a few. Also, for the international exposure of the students an MoU had been signed with ACL Norway.
