(i) The area of a rectangular plot is 528 m2. The length of the plot (in metres) is one more than twice its breadth. We need to find the length and breadth of the plot.

(ii) A train travels a distance of 480 km at a uniform speed. If the speed had been 8 km/h less, then it would have taken 3 hours more to cover the same distance. What is the speed of the train?

2. The diagonal of a rectangular field is 60 metres more than the shorter side. If the longer side is 30 metres more than the shorter side, find the sides of the field.
3. Find the roots of the following quadratic equations, if they exist, by the method of completing the square:

(i) 2x2 – 7x +3 = 0

4. Find the discriminant of the equation 3x2– 2x +1/3= 0 and hence find the nature of its roots. Find them, if they are real.

5. Find the roots of quadratic equations by factorisation:
(i) √2 x2 + 7x + 5√2=0

6. Solve the quadratic equation 2x2 - 7x + 3 = 0 by using quadratic formula.

7. Is it possible to design a rectangular park of perimeter 80 and area 400 sq.m.? If so find its length and breadth.

8. Find two consecutive positive integers, the sum of whose squares is 365.

9. The sum of the areas of two squares is 468 m2. If the difference of their perimeters is 24 m, find the sides of the two squares.

5. On comparing the ratios a1/a2, b1/b2, and c1/c2, find out whether the following pair of linear equations are consistent, or inconsistent.
(i) 3x + 2y = 5 ; 2x – 3y = 7

6. Solve the equations x + 2y – 4 = 0 and 2x + 4y – 12 = 0 graphically.

7. Solve the following pair of linear equations by the substitution method.
(i) x + y = 14
x – y = 4
(ii) 3x – y = 3
9x – 3y = 9

8. Solve the following pair of linear equations by the substitution and cross-multiplication methods:
8x + 5y = 9
3x + 2y = 4

9. The coach of a cricket team buys 7 bats and 6 balls for Rs.3800. Later, she buys 3 bats and 5 balls for Rs.1750. Find the cost of each bat and each ball.

10. A fraction becomes 9/11 if 2 is added to both the numerator and the denominator. If, 3 is added to both the numerator and the denominator it becomes 5/6. Find the fraction.

11. Form the pair of linear equations in the following problems, and find their solutions (if they exist) by the elimination method:

(i) Five years ago, Nuri was thrice as old as Sonu. Ten years later, Nuri will be twice as old as Sonu. How old are Nuri and Sonu?
(ii) A lending library has a fixed charge for the first three days and an additional charge for each day thereafter. Saritha paid Rs.27 for a book kept for seven days, while Susy paid Rs.21 for the book she kept for five days. Find the fixed charge and the charge for each extra day.

CBSE Important Questions for Class 10 Maths - POLYNOMIALS

CBSE Class 10 Maths Polynomials important questions are given below. 

1. Does the polynomial a4 + 4a2 + 5 have real zeroes?

2. Find the value of “p” from the polynomial x2 + 3x + p, if one of the zeroes of the polynomial is 2.

3. Compute the zeroes of the polynomial 4x2 – 4x – 8. Also, establish a relationship between the zeroes and coefficients.

4. Find the value of “x” in the polynomial 2a2 + 2xa + 5a + 10 if (a + x) is one of its factors.

5. How many zeros does the polynomial (x – 3)2 – 4 have? Also, find its zeroes.

6. Find the quadratic polynomial if its zeroes are 0, √5.

7. If the zeroes of the polynomial x3 – 3x2 + x + 1 are a – b, a, a + b, then find the value of a and b.

8. α and β are zeroes of the quadratic polynomial x2 – 6x + y. Find the value of ‘y’ if 3α + 2β = 20.

9. Find a quadratic polynomial each with the given numbers as the sum and product of its zeroes, respectively.

CBSE Important Questions for Class 10 Maths - ARITHMETIC PROGRESSIONS

1. Which term of the AP: 21, 18, 15, . . . is – 81? Also, is any term 0? Give reason for your answer.

2. Write first four terms of the AP when the first term a and the common difference d are given as follows:

(i) a = 10, d = 10
(ii) a = -2, d = 0
(iii) a = 4, d = – 3

3. Ramkali saved Rs 5 in the first week of a year and then increased her weekly saving by Rs 1.75. If in the nth week, her weekly savings become Rs 20.75, find n.

5. If the 3rd and the 9th terms of an AP are 4 and  -8, respectively, then which term of this AP is zero.

1: Find the value of k if the points A(2, 3), B(4, k) and C(6, –3) are collinear.

2: Find the distance of the point P (2, 3) from the x-axis. 

3: Find the ratio in which the line segment joining the points (– 3, 10) and (6, – 8) is divided by (– 1, 6).

4: Find the coordinates of the points of trisection (i.e., points dividing into three equal parts) of the line segment joining the points A(2, – 2) and B(– 7, 4).

5: Find a relation between x and y such that the point (x, y) is equidistant from the points (7, 1) and (3, 5).

1: A vertical pole of length 6 m casts a shadow 4 m long on the ground and at the same time a tower casts a shadow 28 m long. Find the height of the tower.

2: If ΔABC ~ ΔQRP, ar (ΔABC) / ar (ΔPQR) =9/4 , AB = 18 cm and BC = 15 cm, then find PR.

3: If the areas of two similar triangles are equal, prove that they are congruent.

4: Sides of triangles are given below. Determine which of them are right triangles.

In case of a right triangle, write the length of its hypotenuse.

(i) 7 cm, 24 cm, 25 cm

5: O is any point inside a rectangle ABCD as shown in the figure. Prove that OB2 + OD2 = OA2 + OC2.

6: If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle to intersect the other two sides in distinct points, then prove that the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.

7: Sides of triangles are given below. Determine which of them are right triangles.
In case of a right triangle, write the length of its hypotenuse.

8: Given ΔABC ~ ΔPQR, if AB/PQ = 1/3, then find (ar ΔABC)/(ar ΔPQR).

1: Prove that the tangents drawn at the ends of a diameter of a circle are parallel.

2: From a point Q, the length of the tangent to a circle is 24 cm and the distance of Q from the centre is 25 cm. Find the radius of the circle.

3: Let s denote the semi-perimeter of a triangle ABC in which BC = a, CA = b, AB = c. If a circle touches the sides BC, CA, AB at D, E, F, respectively, prove that BD = s – b.

4: Two concentric circles are of radii 5 cm and 3 cm. Find the length of the chord of the larger circle which touches the smaller circle.

5: A quadrilateral ABCD is drawn to circumscribe a circle as shown in the figure. Prove that AB + CD = AD + BC.

7: In the figure, two tangents TP and TQ are drawn to a circle with centre O from an external point T, prove that ∠PTQ = 2OPQ.

9: What should be the angle between the two tangents which are drawn at the end of two radii and are inclined at an angle of 45 degrees?

1: If Sin A = 3/4, Calculate cos A and tan A. 

2 : In ∆ ABC, right-angled at B, AB = 24 cm, BC = 7 cm. Determine:

CBSE Important Questions for Class 10 Maths - SOME APPLICATIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY

1: The shadow of a tower standing on level ground is found to be 40 m longer when the Sun’s altitude is 30° than when it is 60°. Find the height of the tower.

2: Two poles of equal heights are standing opposite each other on either side of the road, which is 80 m wide. From a point between them on the road, the angles of elevation of the top of the poles are 60° and 30°, respectively. Find the height of the poles and the distances of the point from the poles.

3: A tree breaks due to a storm and the broken part bends so that the top of the tree touches the ground making an angle of 30° with it. The distance between the foot of the tree to the point where the top touches the ground is 8 m. Find the height of the tree.

4: The angle of elevation of the top of a tower from two points distant s and t from its foot are complementary. Prove that the height of the tower is √st.

5: An observer 1.5 metres tall is 20.5 metres away from a tower 22 metres high. Determine the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the eye of the observer.

6: A circus artist is climbing a 20 m long rope, which is tightly stretched and tied from the top of a vertical pole to the ground. Find the height of the pole, if the angle made by the rope with the ground level is 30°. 

7: The angle of elevation of the top of a tower from a certain point is 30°. If the observer moves 20 metres towards the tower, the angle of elevation of the top increases by 15°. Find the height of the tower.

8: A bridge across the river makes an angle of 45° with the river bank. If the length of the bridge across the river is 150 m, what is the width of the river? 

9: A vertical tower stands on a horizontal plane and is surmounted by a flagstaff of height 7m. From a point on the plane, the angle of elevation of the bottom of the flagstaff is 30° and that of the top of the flagstaff is 45°. Find the height of the tower. 

10: From the top of a 7 m high building, the angle of elevation of the top of a cable tower is 60° and the angle of depression of its foot is 45°. Determine the height of the tower.

1. The radii of two circles are  9 cm and  19 cm respectively. Find the radius of the circle which has circumference equal to the sum of the circumferences of the two circles.

2. The cost of fencing a circular field at the rate of Rs. 24 per metre is Rs. 5280. The field is to be ploughed at the rate of Rs. 0.50 per m2. Find the cost of ploughing the field (Take π = 22/7).

3. The wheels of a car are of diameter 80 cm each. How many complete revolutions does each wheel make in 10 minutes when the car is travelling at a speed of 66 km per hour?

4. The circumference of a circular field is 528 cm. Then its radius is

10. The length of the minute hand of a clock is 14 cm. Find the area swept by the minute hand in 5 minutes.

CBSE Important Questions for Class 10 Maths - SURFACE AREAS AND VOLUMES

1. Two cones have their heights in the ratio 1 : 3 and radii in the ratio 3 : 1. What is the ratio of their volumes?

2. Three cubes of a metal whose edges are in the ratio 3:4:5 are melted and converted into a single cube whose diagonal is 12√3 cm. Find the edges of the three cubes.

3. A solid is in the form of a right circular cone mounted on a hemisphere. The radius of the hemisphere is 3.5 cm and the height of the cone is 4 cm. The solid is placed in a cylindrical tub, full of water, in such a way that the whole solid is submerged in water. If the radius of the cylindrical tub is 5 cm and its height is 10.5 cm, find the volume of water left in the cylindrical tub. (Use π = 22/7)

4. A canal is 300 cm wide and 120 cm deep. The water in the canal is flowing at a speed of 20 km/h. How much area will it irrigate in 20 minutes if 8 cm of standing water is desired?

5. A cubical ice-cream brick of edge 22 cm is to be distributed among some children by filling ice-cream cones of radius 2 cm and height 7 cm up to its brim. How many children will get the ice cream cones? 

6. Find the number of solid spheres each of diameter 6 cm that can be made by melting a solid metal cylinder of height 45 cm and diameter 4 cm.

7. Rasheed got a playing top (lattu) as his birthday present, which surprisingly had no colour on it. He wanted to colour it with his crayons. The top is shaped like a cone surmounted by a hemisphere. The entire top is 5 cm in height, and the diameter of the top is 3.5 cm. Find the area he has to colour. (Take π = 22/7)

8. Mayank made a bird-bath for his garden in the shape of a cylinder with a hemispherical depression at one end, as shown in the figure. The height of the cylinder is 1.45 m, and its radius is 30 cm. Find the total surface area of the bird-bath. (Take π = 22/7)

9. 2 cubes each of volume 64 cm3 are joined end to end. Find the surface area of the resulting cuboid.

10. A tent is in the shape of a cylinder surmounted by a conical top. If the height and diameter of the cylindrical part are 2.1 m and 4 m respectively, and the slant height of the top is 2.8 m, find the area of the canvas used for making the tent. Also, find the cost of the canvas of the tent at the rate of Rs. 500 per m2. (Note that the base of the tent will not be covered with canvas.)
