The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (AKTU), which has been facing criticism for its decision to conduct exams in offline mode during the COVID-19 pandemic, is taking steps to develop a fully online examination system.
The syndicate of the AKTU decided to formulate a fully online examination system based on open-source software in a meeting held on July 22. The International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) will be roped in as the technical consultant.
The university will take help from the technical expertise of the ICFOSS in choosing a proprietary software that may be used until a complete online examination system is put in place. In order to bridge divide divide, the Syndicate also decided to give high-quality laptops to around 1,000 students in its affiliated colleges. The syndicate also gave its approval to spend Rs 4.5 crore for this in the first phase.
AKTU postpones exam
Meanwhile, the university issued a circular regarding the postponement of BTech exam.
The notice read, “In view of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and limitations in transportation facilities, it is notified to the attention of those concerned that BTech S3 (R) (including S1 PT) C slot of December 2020 examination scheduled on July 24, 2021, (Saturday) (reference cited) has been postponed. The revised date will be published soon.”
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the violent protest staged by the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) during the exams held at an engineering college. He said when efforts were bring made to bring educational institutions back to normalcy, student organisations needed to support it.
