Never take academic decisions under family pressure: Swastik Shrivastava

"Do what you want to do, not what others want from you", says Swastik Shrivastava, UPES Dehradun

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun

So the story begins from when I was in class 12th. I had given my Boards, was waiting for my result, and was appearing for different competitive exams conducted by different colleges without any coaching classes or without taking a drop. UPESEAT was my last exam, and as usual, I was not prepared for those bundle of questions (nearly 200 questions which I had to solve in just 2 hours). Also, as I had taken many entrance examinations before, I was fully confident that I would get admission through one of those and would get my dream branch CSE. So, I was not at all interested in taking this exam but due to family pressure, I took this exam too.

After some days, I got many call letters, sent by all those colleges whose entrance exam was taken by me, like SRMJEE, SAO, KIITEE, GAT UGPT, LPUNEST, COMEDK UGET, and my family decided to get me admitted to SAO University. It ranked 26th among the universities in India (in 2016) and 1st in Orissa. We attended the counselling session, and as expected, I got my dream branch of Computer Science. I was so excited that I can’t explain in words! After some days, I got a mail from UPES that I got selected and was called to attend the counselling session at Delhi. As per my mother’s wish we attended this counselling, at Air Force Stadium, Delhi. And I don’t know how, but I got CSE branch in UPES without any coaching classes and without any preparation.

Finally, I got admission in UPES through UPESEAT. Now, I am moving to the 3rd year of college. I would like to advise everyone to first find detailed information about every college, read relevant and real reviews from Shiksha.com or any other site, think twice, take as much time you want, and then take the final decision. Never take a decision under family pressure. Do what you want to do, not what others want from you.

No, JEE Main is not mandatory for UPES Dehradun BTech admission. While the university accepts the scores of the exam, it is not the only accepted exam. Students can also submit scores of UPESEAT/ SAT India/ CUET exams for BTech admission.
