What is NIRF
NIRF, also called as the National Institutional Ranking Framework, is a method used by the MoE (Ministry of Education) to rank higher education institutions across India. Launched in September 29, 2015, NIRF provides a transparent and data-driven ranking that helps students, parents, and policymakers evaluate the quality and performance of Indian colleges and universities.

NIRF 2026 Rank List Date: How Rank List is Prepared
NIRF Ranking list 2026 is prepared based on the data submitted by institutions, which the Ministry of Education verifies and scores as per parameters before the final NIRF rankings.
First, the institutions register and submit data
Every year college and institutions that want to be ranked have to fill in data on NIRF official portal, called Data Capturing System. They provide information like how many faculty and students they have, how much they spend on infrastructure, research papers they’ve published, placement stats, etc. Almost all colleges and universities in India participate because a good NIRF rank matters for reputation and admission.
Institutions choose their categories
Institutions only compete in categories that match what they actually offer. For example, in NIRF 2026 Engineering rank list, institutions will appear only under the Engineering and Overall categories (if applicable). NIRF has a total of 17 categories (Overall, University, Engineering, Management, Medical, Law, Pharmacy, Architecture, Dental, Agriculture, and others, including a newer Sustainability/SDG category).

NIRF Data and ranking are scored based on five parameters
Every institution is scored out of 100 marks, which is split in five parameters, which can be checked below. Each parameter has a weightage of 30%.
NIRF 2026 Ranking: Final Scoring
Once all five parameter scores are calculated and weighted, the institutions are ranked within each category from highest total to lowest. Lastly, the Ministry of Education compiles data and publishes it as per the NIRF category-wise ranking list and PDF on the official NIRF ranking 2026 release date.
