The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar is closed for winter vacation from today: November 30, 2023, which is 10 days ahead of schedule. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure, a day after protests against a student's alleged social media post. Apart from this, the Islamia College of Science and Commerce suspended all classwork and internal exams scheduled for the day.
The Dean of Students Welfare issued a circular which reads, "Pursuant to declaration of Winter Vacation for students w.e.f 30.11.2023 vide Order No. 60 of 2023 issued under endorsement No. NITS/R/23/600 dated 30.11.2023 all hostel boarders (Boys and girls) are instructed to vacate the hostels with immediate effect."

Reason for Early Winter Vacation in NIT Srinagar
The decision to declare winter vacations came following an alleged blasphemous social media post against a particular religion by a non-local student. The protests were held by local students of NIT. They have made allegations that a non-local Hindu student posted a derogatory story on social media.
Winter Vacation for Educational Institutions
Earlier this week, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) announced winter vacations in a phased manner for educational institutions across the Kashmir Valley. The decision comes as a response to the prevailing severe cold conditions in the region and is designed to provide respite to both students and staff. The college authorities suspended the classes and sent the students home early to prevent the escalation of the protests.
