Students’ Speak: Internships help analyze real-world scenarios and gain hands-on experience
By: Payal Jajodia
Internships are very important for engineering students to understand the real-world problem scenarios and gain hands-on experience in developing enterprise level solutions. Payal Jajodia provides an insight into distinct advantages of pursuing internship and working on live projects.
I am currently pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering from Poornima University. It is necessary for an engineering student to pursue an internship during their course duration. The internship is usually of 2-3 months duration for the pre-final year students so that they can enhance and upgrade their skills and learn new technology. For the final year students, the internship period is of 5-6 months during their final semester, to give them an opportunity to experience an industry-oriented work environment, besides providing them a live platform for displaying their knowledge and skills. Moreover, the internship provides the students with real-world scenarios and helps in personality development. It offers the infrastructure required by students to map their classroom learning to the industry-based problems and bring out solutions with hands-on practice.
Several students during their internship work on various projects related to their domain or field of interest. The professors of the college provide a scenario to the students and under the guidance of professor, the students work on the project. Some companies allow interns to work on live projects which gives them an opportunity to understand challenges at an enterprise level and to come up with the solutions. The projects are usually related to their specific domain and according to the company’s profile and requirements. Deadlines are set so that the students can complete and present their project along with a report to the company. Thus, the projects done during the internship period provide strong testimonials to be included in the resume and to discuss with the interviewers during placements. It builds much-required confidence among the students to excel in a professional set-up.
Besides organizing the on-campus placement drives, there are various other activities conducted by our college for off-campus placements. For example, the college allows enrolling for the company of a student’s interest. If a student opts to join a company through off-campus placement instead of the on-campus placement, they have to give a regret letter to the company in which they selected through on-campus drive and an acceptance letter to the other company. Various training programs, skills development programs, soft skills sessions, aptitude tests and special lectures by the experts or the HR of the company are organized in the college for students. The college also provides references for the student to that particular company. The students are provided with details of the company and sometimes professors provide direct guidance. The Training & Placement Office (TPO) also assists the students for off-campus placements.
