Students’ Speak: Placement overview of IIM Shillong '2018-19

The final placement for IIM Shillong for 2018-2019 in which I passed was magnificent. The institute recorded 100% placement that year. A total of 62 companies took part in the placement process in various domains of Consulting, Finance, General Management, IT, Operations and Sales & Marketing.

The final placement for IIM Shillong for 2018-2019 in which I passed was magnificent. The institute recorded 100% placement that year. A total of 62 companies took part in the placement process in various domains of Consulting, Finance, General Management, IT, Operations and Sales & Marketing.

In Consulting & Strategy domain, the highest package given was 26.5LPA. Deloitte, Cognizant, Bain & Company, GMM Pfaudler, United Health Group, Trident were the major recruiters in the consulting domain. Approx. 26% of the total batch of 177 participants was placed in the consulting domain. Consulting companies generally have 2-3 rounds, the first round being Guesstimate followed by interview and HR round. To prepare for the consulting profile, start by practicing Guesstimate. And must go through the book “Case In Point” to prepare for case round. Try to see which different models are used to analyze various cases in a detailed manner.

In the Sales and Marketing domain, the highest package given was 28LPA. Amazon, GroupM, Infosys, ITC, Tafe, Piramal, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Titan, Maruti Suzuki, OYO, Rivigo, Ultra Tech, Value Labs were the major recruiters for Sales and Marketing domain. About 25% of the batch was placed in the Sales and Marketing profile. Marketing companies generally have 2 rounds: first being GD round followed by interview round. To prepare for Sales and Marketing profile, be aware of what is happening around. Must go through “Kotler” book to refresh all the marketing jargons and do use them in the interview.

In Finance, the highest package given was 20LPA. JP Morgan Chase, Barclays, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC, ICICI, Tresvista, Vivriti Capital were the major recruiters for the Finance domain. About 16% of the batch got placed in the Finance domain. The Finance companies generally have 3 rounds: first being GD round followed by interview and HR round. To prepare for the finance profile, one must go through various subjects like Portfolio Management, Equity, Financial Reporting, Derivatives and Exotics products, Fixed Income Securities and Corporate Finance. If you have prepared for CFA or FRM, it will provide added advantage to crack the interview.

For IT and Analytics, the highest package offered was 22LPA. Accenture, Fidelity Investment, Shopclues, VM Ware, Tredence, Zenoti were the major recruiters. About 12% of the batch was placed in IT Sector. To prepare for IT and Analytics, start by brushing up your basic statistical knowledge. Must read about Agile and Scrum technology and how it can be used in various Software projects. Also, go through various supervised and unsupervised algorithms to analyze data. Knowledge of guesstimates will provide added advantage.

For Operations, the highest package offered was 20 LPA. Henkel, Ola, OYO, Tata steel, VM Ware were the major recruiters. About 8% of the batch got placed in the Operations profile.

It is tough to get admission at IIM Shillong. The institute accepts admission based on entrance exams. The institute accepts national entrance exams like CAT, GMAT, WE-MAT and others. It is followed by the personal interview.
