The Apex Court bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice K Vinod Chandran has issued notice to Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, over non-payment of stipend to FMGs.

FMGs Stipend Issue

The Supreme Court of India has issued notice to Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, over non-payment of stipend to foreign medical graduates during their internship. Further, the Apex Court has demanded that the National Medical Commission (NMC) submit its response regarding the aforementioned scenario.

A panel of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K Vinod Chandran heard arguments from advocate Tanvi Dubey, who represented MBBS student Akash Udayakumar and others. She said that students interning at Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, were not receiving their stipends for their internship period. Meanwhile, the bench issued notice to the medical college and fixed the hearing for the month of July.

The bench pointed out that the non-payment of stipend is a "sheer violation' of the fundamental rights of FMGs doing their internship. Since the duty hours of Indian medical graduates and foreign medical graduates are similar, FMGs deserve a stipend on time, as with Indian medical graduates, as reported by Medical Dialogues.

The students already have huge educational loans and also have to bear expenses while pursuing their medical internship; many of them are from different parts of the world. Hence, they need a stipend as much as any other person working anywhere in the world.

"Once they come back to their home country, the issues such as non-payment of stipend, which they are claiming as a matter of right for the work done by them, are a big demotivating factor for them to work," the SC bench expressed.
