NEET Result 2026: Tie-breaking Criteria

What happens when two or more candidates secure the same marks in the NEET UG results? Owing to a large number of test-takers, it is not rare for two or more candidates to secure the same marks in this examination. However, such candidates will not share the same rank on the NEET merit list. Hence, NTA has a tie-break mechanism in place for such situations. The NEET 2026 Tie-Breaking criteria were changed by NTA. The following parameters are considered in the case of tie-in scores:

  6. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the Test, followed by
  7. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the Test, followed by
  8. In case, the first seven criteria are exhausted and the tie still persists, it will be resolved through a random process with the guidance of an independent expert committee.

FAQs on NEET 2026 Result

Check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for NEET 2026 Result.

Q:   Can there be more than one topper in NEET?
A:

Yes, there can be more than one topper in NEET. Basically, any NEET taker, who has scored 720 or close to that, and has ranked between 1 and 10, are considered as NEET toppers. Since NEET is an objective-type multiple-choice question (MCQ) test, there is a possibility that more than one candidates can score full marks. In that case, the tie-breaking criterion will be applied to determine the All India Rank (AIR) of the toppers. In rare scenario, two NEET toppers can be given AIR 1. For instance, in NEET 2023, two candidates scored 720 and both of them secured AIR 1. On the other hand, the third candidate scored 716 out of 720 and was allotted AIR 3.

Q:   Can I apply for admission to AIIMS and JIPMER, Puducherry on the basis of the NEET result?
A:
Yes, AIIMS and JIPMER conduct admissions on the basis of NEET result or scores. After the implementation of the NMC ACT NEET is the sole entrance examination for admission to UG medical courses in India. Earlier, AIIMS and JIPMER used to conduct their own entrance exams which were scrapped in 2020. The admission to these institutes will be done through the counselling process conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) seats.
Q:   What is a NEET safe score for OBC category candidates?

According to the NEET 2024 cutoff for OBC category is 127 to 161, which is the 40th percentile. While this is the qualifying score or marks as decided by NTA, in terms of admission, a score range of 400 to 600 is considered safe for admission to MBBS courses and for admission to BDS, BSc Nursing, BAMS, BUMS or BHMS courses, a NEET score of 300 or above would be good enough.

A NEET score of 150 and above can be considered as a NEET safe score for PWD category candidates.

Q:   Why NTA released NEET 2025 result twice?
A:

The NEET 2025 result was originally released on June 14, 2025. The results for candidates who were affected due to a power cut at the exam centres were withheld. These candidates had filed a petition at the MP High Court demanding a retest. As per the verdict dated July 14, 2025, the Division Bench of the MP High Court ruled out the re-test request, but asked NTA to release the scorecards for the petitioners or the withheld candidates. Accordingly, NTA released the NEET 2025 scorecard for these candidates on July 15, 2025.

Q:   I could not qualify NEET. Can I still download my NEET result?
A:
Yes, you will still be able to download the result of NEET by logging in to the official exam website. The scorecard will consist of information such as subject-wise and overall scores, percentiles and All India Rank, along with the qualifying cutoff or marks. In case a candidate does not qualify for NEET then he/she would not be able to participate in the counselling process. However, they may take admission to other courses conducting admission through NEET scores, for which counselling process is not conducted.
