FMGE exam, commonly known as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) 2026 exam, is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The exam is conducted biannually in computer-based mode. The FMGE June 2026 session exam dates will be released on the official portal. The FMGE registration process 2026 is expected to start in the last week of April 2026.  

The medical licensing exam is prevalent among post-graduate medical practitioners who have earned international degrees and wish to practice in India. Several students have doubts about the number of attempts/limits allowed on the FMGE exam. With NBEMS conducting the exam every year, this question has gained traction among the aspirants who have not been able to earn a medical license to practice medicine in India. How Many Attempts Are Allowed for the FMGE Exam?

There is no limit on the number of attempts a student can take to appear for the FMGE exam. NBEMS allows students to avail themselves of the medical license if they wish to practice the medical profession in India. Therefore, there is no limit or restriction on the FMGE attempts allowed for students.

However, in case a student has cleared the exam and has received the medical license, then the student will not be allowed to appear for the exam. The FMGE license is valid for a lifetime, and aspirants need to repeatedly appear for the exam to avail it.

Q:   How many exam centre options are available in FMGE exam?

The NBEMS released a total of 47 cities which are available while filling the application form of FMGE 2025. The FMGE exam centre list is mentioned in the admit card. Applicants are advised to check the details mentioned in the FMGE admit card 2025, and in case of any concerns, the students need to contact the authorities.

Q:   How many candidates qualified FMGE exam last year?
A: 

All the applicants who appear in the FMGE exam and secure a total of 150 marks out of the total 300 marks are declared FMGE qualified candidates.  

Last year in 2023, a total 38,355 candidates, appeared for the FMGE exam. Out of the total participated in the exam, 30,046 students failed and only 8309 could pass this examThe passing percentage was around 23%.

Q:   Can I apply for the FMGE exam without having MBBS degree?
A: 

No, Students who want to appear & qualify FMGE exam must have a MBBS degree. FMGE exam is conducted for the students who completed their MBBS degree from abroad and they want to practise in India. Though there are certain countries like UK, USA, Austraila, Canada & New Zeland, students passed from these countries don't need to appear in FMGE exam to practise in India. 

Who is Eligible to Apply for the FMGE exam?

Find out the FMGE exam eligibility criteria to appear for the exam:

  1. They must be Indian citizens or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Only these people can apply for the FMGE exam.
  2. Students must have a basic medical degree. This degree should be approved by the Indian Embassy in that country.
  3. The applicants must also give proof of their medical degree. If they do not give the required papers on time, they cannot appear for the FMGE exam.
  4. They must have an Eligibility Certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the former Medical Council of India (MCI).
  5. The result of the final exam for the basic medical qualification will be announced online.

FMGE Exam - Exceptions for students

A students seeking provisional or permanent registration in India shall not have to qualify for the Screening Test if he/she holds an Under Graduate medical qualification from Australia/Canada/New Zealand/United Kingdom/United States of America and the holder thereof has also been awarded a Post Graduate medical qualification in Australia/Canada/New Zealand/ United Kingdom/United States of America and has been recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in that country.

Q:   What is the maximum time frame to complete MBBS degree to be eligible for FMGE exam?
A: 

Candidates are advised to complete their MBBS degree programme by October 31. and must submit a proof of passing the same while applying for the FMGE exam. 

If any applicants fail to substantiate their claim of having passed the primary medical qualification by the above mentioned prescribed cut off date with supportive documents, his/her candidature shall be cancelled.

Q:   Can I pursue a master's degree from India if I don't clear FMGE?
A: 

No, it is mandatory to clear FMGE if you have completed your undergraduate medical degree programme from outside India. However, candidates with an undergraduate medical degree from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States of America or the United Kingdom, are exempted from FMGE. They need not to appear for FMGE exam for pursuing Masters in medical field. Candidates have to apply on the official website, NBE. Edu. In to register and submit application for the exam.

Q:   What is the total score required in FMGE exam?

The FMGE exam has 300 MCQs worth 300 marks. Each correct answer gives 1 mark, and there is no negative marking. The exam is divided into two sections, Part A and Part B; each section is of 2 and a half hours. To pass, one must score 150 out of 300.

NBEMS has the exclusive right to set and change the FMGE exam pattern. For the FMGE December 2026 exam, the exam pattern will remain same. 

Here is all you need to know about the FMGE 2026 exam:

About the Exam

The FMGE December 2026 exam will be held online on a computer. The exam language is English, and students are not allowed to choose any other language. The exam had a total of 300 multiple‑choice questions. The exam will be held in two shifts on the same day. Every shift is 2 hours and 30 minutes. Students can move freely between different sections during the exam. There is no fixed time for any of the sections.

FMGE Marking Scheme

According to the FMGE exam pattern, all the questions in the FMGE question paper will have equal weightage. One mark will be awarded for every correct answer. No marks will be awarded/ deducted for incorrect answers. The examination is conducted in two phases - Part A and Part B of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

FMGE Pass Percentile

According to the FMGE guidelines, which are released by NBEMS, a student needs to score at least 50 per cent marks in the examination to qualify for the FMGE exam. Only those students will be entitled to get an FMGE certificate who pass the exam by securing the minimum qualifying marks.

The FMGE cutoff is released once the FMGE results are released. Once the FMGE cutoff is out, those who beat the cutoff list will be called for the counselling process. Students must score a minimum of 150 out of 300 to be able to beat the cutoff.

There is currently no limit on total number of attempts for FMGE. You can appear for as many sessions as needed. Very soon, National Exit Test (NExT) will replace FMGE exam. It may introduce new regulations regarding attempt limits once implemented. As of now, no limit for re-attempts.
