National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences conducts FMGE 2026. It is a medical licensing exam held in computer based mode. FMGE is conducted for Indian and overseas citizens who have completed their medical education outside India and want to practise medicine in the country. The board will conduct FMGE exam thrice a year. FMGE October 2026 exam is scheduled to be conducted on October 31, 2026.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed for the FMGE Exam?

There is no limit on the number of attempts for FMGE exam. Candidates can appear for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination as many times as required. They must meet the eligibility criteria for exam.

National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences decides to conduct FMGE thrice a year. One additional exam is added in October. So candidates who do not qualify in one session can apply for next session. 

Candidates who have already passed FMGE exam and obtained their medical registration cannot appear for it again. The purpose of the exam is to qualify foreign medical graduates for medical registration in India.

Q:   Can I pursue a master's degree from India if I don't clear FMGE?
A: 

No, it is mandatory to clear FMGE if you have completed your undergraduate medical degree programme from outside India. However, candidates with an undergraduate medical degree from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States of America or the United Kingdom, are exempted from FMGE. They need not to appear for FMGE exam for pursuing Masters in medical field. Candidates have to apply on the official website, NBE. Edu. In to register and submit application for the exam.

Q:   Can I send someone else on my behalf to collect my FMGE Pass Certificate?

No, it is mandatory for the candidate to be present when the FMGE Passing certificates are being issued. In the absence of the candidate, the authorities will not issue the Certificate. Hence, applicants are advised to reach the Dwarka office address to collect the FMGE certificates within time. 

Q:   What will be the total marks for FMGE exam?
A: 

There are a total two papers for which FMGE exam is being conducted. Each paper is being conducted for 150 marks each. In total FMGE exam will be conducted for a total of 300 marks. 

Q:   Can I appear for FMGE exam in Hindi language or any other regional language?
A: 

No, the FMGE exam is conducted only in English medium. A candidate cannot appear for the FMGE 2025 exam in any other regional language. Unlike other competitive exams, there is no other medium of language introduced on this entrance exam.

Who is Eligible to Apply for the FMGE exam?

  1. They must be Indian citizens or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Only these people can apply for the FMGE exam.
  2. Students must have a basic medical degree. This degree should be approved by the Indian Embassy in that country.
  3. The applicants must also give proof of their medical degree. If they do not give the required papers on time, they cannot appear for the FMGE exam.
  4. They must have an Eligibility Certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the former Medical Council of India (MCI).
  5. The result of the final exam for the basic medical qualification will be announced online.

FMGE Exam - Exceptions for students

A students seeking provisional or permanent registration in India shall not have to qualify for the Screening Test if he/she holds an Under Graduate medical qualification from Australia/Canada/New Zealand/United Kingdom/United States of America and the holder thereof has also been awarded a Post Graduate medical qualification in Australia/Canada/New Zealand/ United Kingdom/United States of America and has been recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in that country.

The FMGE cutoff is released once the FMGE results are released. Once the FMGE cutoff is out, those who beat the cutoff list will be called for the counselling process. Students must score a minimum of 150 out of 300 to be able to beat the cutoff.

About FMGE Exam

Here is all candidates need to know about the FMGE 2026 exam:

FMGE October 2026 Exam Pattern

FMGE October 2026 exam will be conducted in computer based mode at designated test centres. The question paper will be in English. Candidates will not be able to choose any other language. FMGE question paper will have 300 multiple choice questions. All questions will be objective type. There will be two shifts of exam on same day. Candidates will get 2 hours and 30 minutes.

 FMGE Marking Scheme

All questions in FMGE exam pattern carry equal marks. Each correct answer gives one mark. There is no negative marking in the FMGE question paper. No marks are cut for wrong answers, and the exam is conducted in two parts, called Part A and Part B. Each part has a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

FMGE Passing Criteria

According to the guidelines given by NBEMS, students must score well to pass. A student needs at least 50 per cent marks to qualify for the FMGE exam. Only students who score the required marks will pass the exam. These students will receive the FMGE certificate after qualifying.

No, they are exempt. Under the current regulations of the National Medical Commission (NMC), medical qualifications granted by recognised universities in UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are exempt. They do not need to appear in FMGE Exam.
