Often known as caustic potash, lye, and potash lye, potassium hydroxide is a very strong base of this alkali metal hydroxide. Its presence is that of a transparent solution in its aqueous form. KOH can exist as white to slightly yellow lumps, flakes, pellets, or rods in its solid-state. No characteristic odour in its solid-state can be traced to this compound. The water solubility of potassium hydroxide is readily soluble in ethanol, methanol, and glycerin. It is also slightly soluble in ether. It is non-combustible but extremely corrosive.

Illustrated Examples
- What is responsible for saponification?
Potassium Hydroxide is a kind of lye that is used for the manufacture of liquid soap. It is sometimes referred to as potash, lye, or also KOH. This is the chemical that allows liquid soap to be formed by saponification of the oils & fats.
- Comment on the solubility of Potassium Hydroxide.
In a Lye Relaxer, the primary active ingredient is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). Sodium Hydroxide relaxers are very effective at easily breaking down the ties of the scalp (straightening the hair). Potassium hydroxide has a high degree of solubility in soap-based materials, making it an ideal ingredient.
- Is potassium hydroxide a solid base?
A solid base is one that is fully ionic, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. In solution, you should conceive of the compound as being completely divided into metal and hydroxide ions. Each mole of sodium hydroxide can dissolve in order to give the solution a mole of hydroxide ions.
