Cotton University offers various UG, PG and PhD courses, such as BSc, BA, BCA, MCA, MSC and MA. Admission to all the courses is entrance-based. The university accepts CUR-UG for admission to UG courses and conducts a university-based entrance exam i.e. CPGEE for admission to PG courses. Applicants seeking admission to any of these courses must appear in the entrance exam and score well to grab the final seat.

Cotton University in Guwahati has a good placement record. According to the NIRF report 2023, 13 UG and 95 PG students were placed during the placements. The median package offered to UG (3-year) students during placements 2023 stood at INR 5.34 LPA. For PG (2-year) and PG (3-year) courses, the median package offered during Cotton University placements 2023 was INR 3.62 LPA and INR 3.80 LPA, respectively. The university has a placement cell that organizes various activities to prepare students for placements, and around 50-60% of students got placed in various courses.

Cotton University has five boys' hostels and three girls' hostels, and all the hostels are equipped with modern amenities like A. C. rooms, twin-sharing, and triple-sharing apartments. However, the fees vary as per the living accommodations chosen, and seats in these hostels are based on merit. The hostel fees at Cotton University are around Rs. 5,500 per year, and the average hostel fee per year is Rs. 9,500 for both girls and boys. However, the hostels are allotted according to the branch, and there are separate hostels for both boys and girls.

As a Higher Education institution, Cotton College has gone through several milestones from the initial phase of being under Calcutta University to the present when it is one of the full-fledged autonomous state universities of Assam. It is a Public State University established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam.

It was established in 2017 by the provisions of an Act enacted by Assam Legislative Assembly to merge the Cotton College State University and Cotton College.

Yes, seats are reserved for students belongling to scheduled tribe, scheduled caste, obc canditates belonging to Assam. CASTE CERTIFICATE ISSUED ONLY BY A COMPETENT AUTHORITY UNDER GOVT. OF ASSAM IS VALID. A  few seats are reserved for students having outstanding performance in the field of sports, culture, NCC, NSS and guides
