IIT Gandhinagar offers a PhD course at the doctoral level in 13 specialisations. Apart from regular PhD, the institute also offers Start Early PhD. Offered in regular and continuing doctoral programme (CDP) mode, admission to PhD and Start Early PhD course is based on an interview supplemented by a written test, if necessary.
Admission is generally open towards the beginning and end of each academic year. In addition to the announced admission cycles with a prescribed deadline of application, the institute also considers applications for any time of the year for exceptional candidates. Based on the qualifications of the candidates and the need for the specialisation, applications received are processed via duly constituted selection committees at regular intervals. IIT Gandhinagar admission process is entirely based on the selection of candidates via popular entrance exams such as JEE Advanced and GATE, etc., for courses such as BTech and MTech, respectively. Further, IIT Gandhinagar conducts an institute-level test for the selection MA and PhD courses. Candidates must fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria as per the course requirements and then qualify for the respective entrance exam in order to secure a seat at IIT Gandhinagar. Later on, the final seat allotment is done through counselling process.
Admission criteria to IIT Gandhinagar is both, merit and entrance based and is different for all UG and PG programmes. To get into UG programmes, the eligibility criteria is the minimum aggregate in Class 12 or equivalent, along with entrance exams. Similarly, the eligibility criteria to get into PG programmes is graduation in any discipline (this may vary from course to course), along with entrance exams for a few courses.
Candidates seeking admission to BTech at IIT Gandhinagar are expected to qualify both JEE Main and JEE Advanced and further go through JoSAA counselling to secure admission. However, getting final admission only on the basis of JEE Main score, is not possible. In addition, to be eligible for the BTech programme, candidates must have passed their Class 12 with 75% aggregate. Hence, while JEE Main is the most important starting point to get into IIT Gandhinagar for the flagship course, it is not the only criteria for it.
IIT Gandhinagar PhD Application Process 2024
Candidates seeking admission to IIT Gandhinagar for PhD must apply online on the official website. Those looking forward to applying for more than one discipline must submit a separate application for each discipline. After the successful submission of the application form, students receive an application number and a link to download the application form. It must be saved, filled and shared as a hard copy along with the self-attested copies of all the relevant documents during the interview.
- The application fee is INR 150 for SC/ ST/ PD categories and INR 300 for other categories.
- There is no application fee for Start Early PhD.

- Fill in the required info and complete the registration.
- Fill the detailed application form by providing information around educational qualifications, parents' details, address of communication and permanent address, and exam center preference.
- Upload scanned images of passport-size photographs and signature.
- Pay the application fee.
- The application will be automatically submitted after the successful application amount payment.
