The design school offer two design programmes of duration ranging from two to five years. UPES School of Design BDes and MDes courses are offered across different specialisations such as Product Design, Game Design, Animation and VFX, etc. Before applying to a course, aspirants should go through the course eligibility and selection details. UPES School of Design Admission Process 2025

For admission, a candidate must have a valid score in either of the accepted exams for the applied course. Candidates without a valid score in the national-level exams can take the entrance examination conducted by UPES for design course admissions. UPES School of Design's admission process is a multi-step procedure. Candidates can read on for more details about each of the admission stages:

STEP 1: SoDS Dehradun Application Process 2025

The school of design accept applications via online mode. Hence, the eligible candidates can visit its official website to apply. During the form filling, candidates should keep scanned copies of the important documents handy. The application can further be submitted successfully after the fee payment. To apply for the UPES DAT exam, candidates can visit the university website only.

STEP 2: Shortlisting of Students

The school further shortlists applications based on the candidate's scores in the accepted examinations. Such students should be informed over mail or through any either medium about the selection.

STEP 3: Portfolio Presentation & Interview

Shortlisted candidates are further required to appear for the portfolio presentation and the interview round. A candidate must participate in these selection rounds for admission. The schedule for the same shall be available on the UPES official website.

STEP 4: Admission Confirmation

The programme is offered in nine different specialisations. and candidates are selected based on entrance exam scores and their performance in PI. UPES School of Design MDes Admission 2025

4 courses 2 years

At the PG level, the School offers two courses, namely MDes and MPlan. The duration of both programmes is two years that is divided into four semesters. MPlan admissions are merit-based, whereas UPES also conducts an entrance exam for admission to the MDes programme.

MDes programme is offered in seven different specialisations, with each specialisation having a seat intake of 10 students. As a part of the course curriculum, students need to undergo an internship for the completion of the course. Candidates, who have completed graduation in Designing, can apply for MDes programme. The final selection of students is based on the entrance exam scores and their performance in PI followed by a presentation on their work portfolio.

UPES School of Design Scholarships 2025

UPES offers various scholarships on merit-basis under all UG and PG programmes. Candidates can get up to 100 per cent tuition fee waiver under these scholarships based on their marks. Details regarding UPES scholarships are given below.

Scholarship for BDes students:

BDes students are awarded a scholarship based on their Class 10 and Class 12 percentile. Candidates, who have secured an aggregate of 80 per cent in Class 10 and Class 12, can get a tuition fee waiver of 50 per cent for the first semester. This scholarship is offered only to per cent seats in each programme.

Scholarship for MDes students:

MDes students are awarded a scholarship based on their Class 10, Class 12 and graduation scores. A tuition fee waiver of 50 per cent will be given to the candidates who have secured an aggregate of 60 per cent in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation.

Great campus, creative vibe.

Placements: I've just completed my second year in BDes in UPES, so I'm not completely aware of the placements yet. However, according to what I've heard, around 80% get placed, and the remaining ones are given a minimum salary just so that the college can claim 100% placements.

Infrastructure: There are many facilities, classrooms with projectors, design labs, a library, a sports ground, a hostel, a gym, WiFi, an infirmary, a multipurpose hall, cafeterias, and a lot of scenic and creative spaces. I haven't lived in the in-campus hostels, but I've heard they're okay, just overpriced.

Faculty: Teachers are helpful and experienced, and the teaching quality is good with a practical focus. The course is industry relevant and updated. Exams are moderate in difficulty, and most students pass with consistent efforts. Specifically for design, we don't have written exams, rather interaction-based ones, called the jury.

Other: I chose this course for its creative focus and industry exposure. The best part is the hands-on projects. I wish there was more interdepartmental collaboration. The campus vibe, events, crowd, and the surroundings are lively and inspiring.

Placements: I’m doing a B.Des. in Animation and VFX at UPES. Around 88–90% of students in our course secure placements. The highest package is 10 LPA, the average is 6.5 LPA, and the lowest is 2 LPA. Companies like Dell, TCS, and MPL hire from our course. Approximately 80% of students secure internships, often at companies like Dell and Accenture. Most roles are 2D/3D animator, VFX artist, storyboard artist, or concept artist. Placements depend a lot on how good your portfolio is. If you work hard and build skills, you get good opportunities. UPES does help, but you have to try too.

Infrastructure: Our Animation and VFX course has good labs with drawing tables, powerful PCs, Wi-Fi, and projectors. The library has useful books and is peaceful. Classrooms are clean and have AC. The hostel rooms are decent, Wi-Fi is pretty bad, not going to lie, and the washrooms are clean if maintained. Food in the mess is average, but the canteen has better options. Medical help is available 24/7 on campus. There is a sports ground, a basketball court, and indoor games too. Overall, if you stay involved and take care of things, it is a good place to learn and stay.

Faculty: Most teachers are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, especially in animation and design subjects. Some teach well, while a few are just okay. The curriculum is mostly good and covers both basic and advanced topics, including industry software. It could be updated a bit more for real-world trends, but it helps make you job-ready if you put in effort. Semester exams are not too hard if you attend classes and complete assignments. The pass percentage is high, around 90% or more. If you work regularly, it is easy to manage.

Other: The best part is learning cool stuff like 2D/3D animation, VFX, and working on real projects. Teachers support creativity. I wish the software access and class schedules were better managed. The campus is beautiful and has lots of greenery. There are fun events like Uurja and Ignite, and the crowd is chill and creative. There is Wi-Fi, sports, clubs, and decent scholarships. It is peaceful here, but far from the main city, so travel takes time.

Good infrastructure and life experience but could be waste of money.

Placements: The placements are not worth the fees, especially for the design courses and they need to improve it. They could have provided more packages as fewer students are there in design courses. They do not offer many options in terms of placement in well-known companies.

Infrastructure: I think the best part of the college is the infrastructure. UPES has 2 campuses in one area that's a drawback because it's far apart but the infrastructure is good. The hostel is also good but the rooms don't have all the facilities.

Faculty: The curriculum is similar to any other college but the faculties are not up to the mark. Some faculties are good and some are not. Faculty members are often biased. The assessment's marking is unfair because most marks depend on internal marking so it's a drawback.

Other: Events and fests could be better than doing it all about campus and clubs.

Good infrastructure with an average faculty. The atmosphere is good.

Placements: The on-campus placements are not that good. The companies that visit for recruitments select 5-6 students out of the whole batch, leaving the rest of them without any placements even when they have good skills along with good portfolios. The college can improve this situation by providing more placement opportunities.

Infrastructure: The campus is good. The college’s hostel doesn’t have proper food facility. The transportation here is another issue. The college is located far from the city with the airport being 1.5 hours away from the college. Also, traveling is expensive here. The classrooms are good though.

Faculty: The faculty here is good. They are very helpful. The exam system for the school of design is jury-based. At the end of every semester, we have a jury and get marked through it along with internal markings. This shows the overall improvement throughout the semester.

Other: The working environment here is very good and flexible thought the crowd can be improved.

Placements: As a third year UI/UX student, I am happy to talk about the placements. Most of us land in jobs having packages ranging from 3 to 15 Lacs per annum. UPES offers great support, industry exposure and a friendly environment, making it a good choice for the students pursuing design.

Infrastructure: We have a high-speed Wi-Fi, well-equipped labs, and spacious classrooms, Hostel accommodations have a good security and laundry services. The dining options provide nutritious meals, good medical services, along with many spots activities. The campus provides a well-equipped gymnasium as well.

Faculty: The faculty is helpful, qualified, approachable and knowledgeable, ensuring a good teaching quality. Semester exams are manageable with a good passing percentage. The curriculum makes UI/UX students industry ready, it includes various topics that are required.
