You are the true saviour of yourself: Gambheer Singh

When I was in class 11, I was confused about my career goal. I had always dreamt of becoming an IAS officer. Some people advised me to do BA some advised BSc.

Many people will give you advice, some good and some not so good. But only you can decide the right path to achieve your dreams. That's exactly what I did. I chose Engineering because most of the top rankers in UPSC examinations are Engineers. And till now, I don't have any regrets with my decision.

Now the question arises, how I got admission in Engineering college? The answer is very simple - through 'HARD WORK'. Well, hard work is the main key to achieve any dream. You can have a lot of dreams but make them come true, you need to work hard. As I had decided to pursue Engineering, I searched for the best way to get into a reputed Engineering college. I appeared in IIT-JEE MAINS for the first time in 2015. I cracked it too but could not get a higher rank and I failed in my first attempt. I decided to try once again and for a safer side I got myself admitted in the university for BSc so that if I failed for the second time in IIT-JEE MAINS, I will have a chance in BSc which would save my one year of preparation.

How I cracked college admission

I embarked upon this journey with strong determination. I looked for the best coaching institutes in my city. Some advised me to go to Kota, Rajasthan. But as I believe that "You and only you are the true adviser to yourself". I decided to do my preparation in my home town and joined a decent coaching institute for engineering entrance exams. I visited some reputed institutes in our city but their fees was very high. On my teacher’s suggestion I took admission in a particular coaching institute. The teachers were quite good at the beginning, but as the time passed we realized that the institute was of no good to us. The teachers were just passing the time, the course was lacking horribly. Their speed of teaching was like Shatabdi Express. We had two choices at that time whether to continue with the coaching or take a risk and study by self. I decided I will study myself and will not go to the coaching because "You and you are the true saviour of yourself". In the last two months, I studied myself. As expected I cracked JEE exam with a good rank. I also cracked other state level and university level engineering entrance exam like UPTU (now AKTU), AMUEEE, MMM etc.

Now I had to choose the right college for me according to my rank. Always remember that choice filling is the most crucial part of the admission procedure. Fill up your choices like you have topped in the exam. Put reputed IIT's at the top, then NIT's and then other colleges. According to the choices I filled, I was allotted IIIT, Jabalpur in the first round. I ended up with IIEST, Shibpur in the last round. Though IIEST, Shibpur is not a bad college I could have get the better college but my choice filling was not up to the mark.

All about my college

IIEST, Shibpur is the second oldest Engineering college in our country. It was established in 1856. Earlier it was known as Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU). This college is very much connected with the nature as it a lot of greenery around its campus. It is located 100 m away from the Hooghly River. College students go there in the evening to spend some time with their friends and to admire nature's beauty. In the night-time you will hear the horn of the ships and boats in the river.

Student and teacher culture is quite healthy in our college. You will find security guards everywhere in the college 24X7. As far as ragging is concerned, I am proud to say that our college has commendable control over this issue. The seniors interact with juniors but they never rag. You will be given a format of introduction to introduce yourself and whenever a senior say 'Chal intro de', you must follow that format while giving your introduction otherwise they might ask you to give your intro again and again. The seniors throw parties for juniors. The teachers are also friendly. They are ready to help students at any time.

And finally I would like to tell you about extra-curricular activities in our college. Our college has a well-equipped gym. There are three playgrounds for football and cricket, there is one basketball court, one volleyball court and a badminton court. Teams from our college participate in some national level tournaments also.

I feel, along with the hard work, your right decision is the key to your dreams because "You and only you is the person who help you in making your dreams come true".
