IGNOU Highlights 2026
Indira Gandhi National Open University (popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University), established in 1985, is considered one of the prominent names for distance/ part-time education in India. IGNOU University began by offering two programmes in 1987, with a strength of approximately 4,500 students. Today, it serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad through its 21 schools, a network of 56 regional centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions. IGNOU Distance Education programmes are offered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) & Online Learning (OL) modes. The university offers more than 200 programmes at certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral levels.
IGNOU courses include BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BA, MA, MCA, MBA, MCom and others. Indira Gandhi National University is the largest university in the world, run by the Central Government of India. It has also been accredited by the NAAC with Grade 'A++'. IGNOU has students from over 40 countries. The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UGC, and the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, organised a seminar on ‘Open University’ with UNESCO. Upon the recommendation of the seminar, the Government of India decided to establish an open university on an experimental basis. In 1974, an eight-member working group was formed, headed by G Parthasarathy, the then Vice-Chancellor of JNU, to monitor the establishment of the open university. Under the Working Group Report 1974, the recommendation to establish a national open university by an act of Parliament was proposed. IGNOU registrations are closed for July Session. The university will conduct the PhD entrance test on Jan 5, 2026. The admissions for next session are likely to open soon.
The tuition fee for BSc, PB BSc and BSc (Hons) range from INR 10,500 to INR 43,500 depending on different specialisations available across both the courses. IGNOU Scholarships 2026
IGNOU scholarships 2025 are offered to students belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST). The university also provides exemption/ reimbursement facilities time to time as per the rules of the university. Candidates can also apply for government scholarships. Students are also advised to collect the scholarship forms from the Directorate of Social Welfare or the office of the Social Welfare Officer of their State, fill them up and submit them to the Regional Director at the Regional Centre. No, for admission to PB BSc nursing at IGNOU, students are required to apply and appear for a written test conducted by the university followed by a counselling session. Aspirants who meet the eligibility requirements need to appear for IGNOU OPENNET exam. Candidates get a seat in the course based on the exam score. The entrance test is conducted in offline mode via OMR sheets. Duration of the exam is 2 hours 30 minutes.
Candidates must be pass outs of any bachelor’s degree and/or in the master’s degree in Science/ Social Science/ Commerce/ Humanities with at least 50% aggregate or have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology with a specialisation in Science and Mathematics with a minimum of 55% aggregate. IGNOU University provides modern amenities with state-of-the-art infrastructure for its students under the Centre for Online Education (CoE). IGNOU Assignment 2026
The Indira Gandhi National University evaluates the candidates based on their performance in the term end examinations, assignments, projects/ practicals. IGNOU assignments carry up to 30% weightage in the final exams. Students must submit the assignments before the IGNOU assignment last date as notified by the university, to be eligible for the IGNOU term end examinations. Students can download assignments from the IGNOU official website (ignou ac in assignment). Students must include important information such as course name, course code, enrollment number, etc. on the first page of IGNOU assignment.
Candidates can follow the steps given below to submit the IGNOU assignment:
- Submit IGNOU TEE assignments to the respective study centre or regional centre as per the instructions given by the regional centre.

Yes, IGNOU has a dedicated Campus Placement Cell, which is popularly known as CPC. The Campus Placement Cell organises campus placement drives from time-to-time. The notification regarding campus placement drives is uploaded online in the placement section of the official website. The job notifications include detailed information regarding no. of vacancies, eligibility, application date, salary package, etc. Apart from this, IGNOU CPC has a strong base of alumni network that helps fellow students to stay updated with relevant job vacancies.
IGNOU results for PhD admission are out on the official website of the institute. Candidates who have at least 50% aggregate in the entrance test (45% aggregate in case of SC/ ST/ OBC (Non Creamy layers)/ Differently abled persons) are shortlisted for the interview subject to the maximum limit of five times of the available seats. The entrance test carries a weightage of 70% and 30% weightage is allocated to the interview/ viva.
IGNOU admission is conducted in two cycles, i.e. January and July. While the registrations for the January session generally get over in March, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) admission for the July session opens in June and remains open till Jul-Aug. The admissions are mainly based on the aggregate obtained by candidates in the last qualifying degree. Students who were not able to take admission in the January batch are open for admission in the July batch. Hence, the answer is almost yes.
