Q: What is the need for a Management degree in Sports?

A: Sports as a sector is now booming with all the league’s being organised. And, sports is a big industry with many connected branches such as Food and Nutrition, Coaching, Health and Fitness, Sports Brands, Sports Analytics, E-Sports and Sports Journalism. These industries have a wide scope and great career opportunities ahead.

Also, a report by the Sector Skill Council of FICCI suggests that there will be a growing number of job opportunities available in the sports sector by 2022(This may get delayed a bit due to the pandemic scenario). As per the 2014 edition of the Sector Skill Council Vision Document of FICCI, there will be a requirement of 4,47,396 highly professional sports coaches. This requirement is assumed considering the upcoming leagues and how sports are getting organised.

Also, a general MBA educates students on aspects such as Marketing, Finance and Operations across industries. Similar principals can be applied in sports industry also to look at what happens off the field to enable performance on the field.

Q: What is the admission process and selection parameter for admission to MBA in Sports Management at KJ Somaiya Institute of Management?

A: Students aspiring admission to MBA Sports Management programme at KJ Somaiya Institute of Management must fulfil the eligibility criteria which is to have a minimum aggregate of 50 per cent in graduation in any stream from a recognised university or UGC-approved college.

Also, aspirants must have a valid score of any nationally accepted management qualifying exam such as MH-CET, CAT, XAT, CMAT and GMAT. Eligible candidates with a valid score of the qualifying exam can apply on institute’s official website by paying an application fee of Rs 2,850 + taxes. The total seat intake is 30 students.

The admission process consists of two broad stages:

  1. Filling up the online application form in which students need to mention ‘Statement of Purpose’
  2. Personal Interview round, for which students are shortlisted on the basis of their SoP

Final selection is made basis the overall profile view of the student. Students are evaluated on the basis of following parameters and weightage:

Q: What will students study during the two-year MBA programme is Sports Management?

A: The curriculum of the Sports Management programme is a perfect blend of theoretical and practical sessions with a few courses taken by sports experts as well as academicians. During these two years, students study subjects related to:

  • Marketing, Branding and Media Management, which includes subjects related to Advanced Sports Marketing, Digital and Social Media Marketing, Managing Sports Media and Broadcasting, Merchandise Manufacturing, etc.
  • Special areas in Sports Management, which includes subjects related to Negotiations in Sports Management, Grassroots Sports Development, Sports Medicine and Sports Tourism Management
  • Business Management, which includes subjects that focuses on business aspects of sports such as Ethics and Law in Sports Management, Human Resources Management, Financial Management and Sports Economics
  • Technology and Analytics, which includes subjects related to Design and Management of Information Systems in Sports, Sports Analytics Management and Technology and Sports Equipment Management
  • Strategy and Leadership includes subjects related to Leadership in Sports Management and Strategic Management

Apart from the course and the curriculum, students will have exposure to the actual functioning of a Sports Academy. All students will be part of various events conducted at the campus, a few of these events national events. There will be a lot of practical exposure to various verticals of sports.

Q: What is the total cost of the two-year MBA porgramme in Sports Management?

A: The total cost of the two-year MBA programme in sports management is Rs 14.94 lakh. The first-year fee is Rs 7.17 lakh and the second-year fee is Rs 7.77 lakh, which is including the tuition fee. Students willing to opt for an accommodation facility on campus need to bear an additional cost of Rs 1.64 lakh for 10 months of duration.

Q: Do you offer any scholarships or financial assistance to students?

A: We understand the lack of financial resources and hence, we do not let it become a reason to sacrifice or compromise on quality education. We do offer need-based scholarships based on demonstrated financial needs. In order to ensure that students receive the support they need, the institute take a holistic look at the financial circumstances of students’ family.

The students who are offered scholarship get boarding and food-fee waiver for complete two years. There are five scholarships in total for students of MBA batch 2020-22. They are divided into two categories:

  • Maitreyi Hostel (For Women): 2
  • Sandipani Hostel (For Men): 3 

For other students, the institute provides complete support in getting the loan from a bank. We help them in completing documentation for an easy process.

A: Similar to any other industry, the sports industry equally requires management professionals who need not have in-depth knowledge of sports. Talking of the placements statistics from last year, the average package offered to the students was Rs 10.4 LPA and this has been increasing year-on-year. Companies such as Deloitte, Puma, Decathlon, Neilsen, TCS, TATA Teleservices, E&Y and JIO recruit students for their sports division for profiles such as Market research, Analyst, Digital Marketing and consulting.
