Alert sounded after leopard spotted in IIT Kanpur

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur staff and students have been put on high alert following reports of a leopard being sighted on the campus. A security guard spotted the leopard near the institute’s airstrip. The residents of the institute have been urged to be vigilant. The institute administration has sought assistance from the Forest Department.
Animal suspected to be hiding in thick vegetation
The IIT community received an email from the institute’s deputy director Prof S Ganesh that a leopard has been spotted on the campus. The animal is suspected to be hiding in the thick vegetation near the IWD headquarters, the helicopter lab, and the new type 3 area. The security team from the institute has been sent out to keep an eye on the leopard’s whereabouts. Residents, children in particular, have been asked to exercise caution and remain vigilant while living on the campus.
Recently, two tigers entered the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) campus in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, leading to the closure of the institute for safety reasons. While one tiger was caught and released in the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Narmadapuram, the other left the campus on its own. The institute had installed 16 cameras and kept around 50 personnel to keep a watch on the wild cats. The institute had also conducted drills to tackle emergencies on the campus.
