The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow has announced the appointment of Prof. Manmohan Prasad Gupta, a distinguished academic from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, as its new Director. Prof. Gupta is set to assume charge on April 23, 2025, marking a historic moment as the first IIT professor to lead the prestigious management institute. The decision was approved by IIM Lucknow’s Board of Governors, chaired by Shri N. Chandrasekaran, for a five-year term.
As per a statement issued by the institute, “IIM Lucknow is pleased to announce that Prof. Manmohan Prasad Gupta, currently serving as Professor at IIT Delhi shall be taking charge as the Director of the institute shortly.”
Prof. Gupta brings a wealth of experience from IIT Delhi’s Department of Management Studies, where he has been a revered educator and researcher. His expertise spans management education, with notable contributions to organizational behavior and strategic management. This appointment underscores IIM Lucknow’s commitment to fostering innovative leadership and academic excellence. Prof. Gupta’s interdisciplinary background is expected to strengthen the institute’s global vision and enhance its reputation as a leader in management education.
He succeeds Prof. Archana Shukla, who completed her five-year tenure as Director on April 4, 2024. Prof. Shukla, a PhD from IIT Kanpur and a professor of organizational behavior, was the first in-house faculty member to serve as IIM Lucknow’s full-time Director, appointed on April 4, 2019. Post-tenure, she continued as Director-in-Charge until the new appointment, as per the IIM Act 2017. The majority of students (37%) placed during IIM Lucknow placements received opportunities in the Consulting domain. The second in the sequence was the Product Management domain with 19% of the students placed.
IIML is ranked at 6th position in the NIRF Management ranking 2023. The other closely ranked IIMs that a student might want to compare are IIM Kozhikode, IIM Calcutta and IIM Indore ranked at 3rd, 4th, and 8th position in the NIRF ranking 2023 (Management). For all four IIMs, Consulting emerged as the top preference among the students, with the highest placement rate.
