IIM Eligibility Criteria - The Indian Institute of Management conducts Common Admission Test or CAT for admission to its 21 campuses across the country. As we all know the IIMs are the top most institutes for management studies (MBA/PGDM) in India, their admission criteria are quite stringent. Although, the academic requirement is low (50 per cent marks in any discipline at Graduate level), the selection process is the opposite. IIM selection criteria - CAT score and WAT-PI are not easy to crack. The IIM shortlisting criteria for admission includes minimum 95+ CAT percentile and 70 per cent and above in graduation. Candidate have to aim to score above the CAT cut off percentile fixed for that year to be eligible for IIM admission.

IIM Eligibility Criteria: CAT Score

The most important eligibility criteria for IIM MBA admission is CAT score. None of the IIMs will accept candidature of an Indian candidate for full-time MBA without the required CAT score. Thus, IIM aspirants must make sure that they appear and clear the CAT exam with 95 percentile (for SC/ST/PwD categories, the cut off is lower). The CAT 2025 exam will be held on November 30, 2025. Aspirant must try to score 98+ percentile for having a chance at the IIMs.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the CAT cutoff required to get into IIM Bangalore?
A:

IIM Bangalore considers two kinds of CAT scores for MBA admission - Qualifying and Final score. Qualifying CAT score is the minimum sectional and overall CAT score used to shortlist students for the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. Candidates above minimum cutoffs in the sectional percentile ranks, the overall percentile rank and having a positive (greater than zero) raw score in all sections of CAT are considered for the next stage. The final CAT score is cutoffs are the basis of which the candidates are called for final selection after the AWT and PI rounds are over.

Q:   What is the validity of CAT score?
A:

CAT score is valid for one year at the IIMs and top B-Schools. In some tier 3 and government institutions, CAT score of previous two years are also acceptable. Many B-schools including IIMs have an option of deferment of admission, wherein you can confirm your admission and pay the nominal fee but join the batch in the next year. It is advised that candidates take admission in the same year as their CAT attempt so that they don't have to reappear next year. Given the competition in MBA space, it is difficult to get a good college whether you have a low score or average score. So, incase one is getting a good college, they should take admission and not drop a year to appear for CAT again.

Q:   Is IIM Ahmedabad hard to get?
A:

IIM Ahmedabad admissions is based on entrance. Therefore, candidates must qualify the eligibility criteria and secure valid scores in CAT entrance exams. Moreoever, candidates ae required to apply for admission through the official website of IIMA. The percentile of CAT for IIM Ahmedabad reached up to 99.6 in the past years which shows how rigorous it is for a student to get admission to this Institute. Candidates are shortlisted for these programmes based on course-specific entrance exams, followed by shortlisting processes which generally comprise a Personal Interview (PI) round.

To conclude, seeking admission to IIM Ahmedabad is challenging but not difficult.

IIM Selection Criteria for MBA/PGP 2026

IIM admission is broadly based on three parameters. This includes:

  1. CAT score
  2. Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI)
  3. Academic record

Firstly, each CAT test taker is shortlisted on the basis of his/her CAT score viz-a-viz CAT cut-offs  for that year. Minimum CAT cutoffs of the top 5 IIMs, namely IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozhikode is generally 90-95 percentile, which means, those who have scored above 90-95 percentile in CAT are eligible for shortlisting for PI-WAT round. On the other hand, cut-offs of newer IIMs range between 70-80 percentile. This eligibility score however does not guarantee shortlisting for WAT/PI. Candidates are shortlisted on higher scores or the final CAT cut offs which ranges between 95 too 99.99/100 percentile..

After crossing the first hurdle of IIM eligibility, candidates have to face Group Discuss and Personal Interview. This stage is decisive for the selection panel makes up their mind about a candidate on the basis of performance in WAT/PI. In the third stage, the candidates are scored on the basis of their academic performance.
