Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games: Chandigarh University Student-Athletes Help India Secure 39 Medals

The XXIII Commonwealth Games, held in  Glasgow, Scotland, from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026, have ended on a high note. This year, the Commonwealth Games were hosted in four main venues in Glasgow, Scotland, including Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena, and Scottish Event Campus. At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, approximately 3000 athletes representing 74 Commonwealth nations and territories showcased their talent in 215 medal events. Overall, there is nothing wrong with saying that the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games enlightened the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence among the Commonwealth nations and territories.

At the grand stage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, student-athletes from Chandigarh University delivered a spectacular performance. The top-class student-athletes from Chandigarh University not only proved their mettle but also significantly contributed to India's medal tally. In Weightlifting, Villuri Ajay Babu, one of the bright minds from Chandigarh University, clinched a Silver medal in the men's 79 kg weight category. With a record-breaking snatch of 149 kg and a 181 kg clean & jerk, Villuri Ajay Babu made everyone stand on their toes with a total weightlifting of 330 kg. In Boxing, the exceptionally talented boxer from Chandigarh University, named Priya Ghanghas, made the university proud by winning a Gold medal in the women's 60 kg weight category.

There is nothing wrong with saying that Australia and England dominated the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a total medal tally of 171 medals (70 Gold, 45 Silver, 56 Bronze) and 110 medals (29 Gold, 45 Silver, 36 Bronze), respectively. Additionally, Canada secured the third position at the grand stage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a total medal tally of 62 medals (19 Gold, 20 Silver, 23 Bronze). On the other hand, Team India finished fourth at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a total medal tally of 39 medals (13 Gold, 17 Silver, and 9 Bronze).

During the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were officially handed over to India. Additionally, Ahmedabad has been selected to host the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games. Undoubtedly, it is a wonderful opportunity for India as it will give wings to the nation's sporting infrastructure and talent. Also, it will motivate Indian youth to prove their mettle on the international level.
