B.Sc. in Geology - Batch of 2020
5.0
Learning and fun together here.
Placements: Many companies like Infosys, Cognizant, Accenture etc. Visit the college and around 20-30% students are placed every year at B.Sc. level which is rare to SEE on Bachelors level. Many students opt for higher education also. The maximum package is 20 lacs per annum and the average package is 4-5 lacs per annum.
Infrastructure: Campus life is quite rich and amazing. Fest is organised every year in December or January and it lasts for 7 days. Foundation day, traditional day, fest rallies, departmental fests etc. Are organised by students. The college has a very huge campus spread across 70 acres. The college has a huge library, basketball court, football ground, amphitheatre, 2 canteens and many hangout places. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and clubs like Astro club, Physics club, sports club etc. Are active.
Faculty: Fergusson College is the most renowned college in India to learn the subject. It does live up to the expectations. Faculty is knowledgeable and friendly and always ready to help you with your doubts and queries. Labs are well-equipped and practicals are taken very seriously. Fieldwork is arranged every year to explore the rocks, minerals, famous geological phenomenon and it helps to achieve the basic understanding of geology. Teachers use both digital and traditional method to teach the subject and importance is given to presentations, assignments, seminar, group discussions etc. Theory exams are conducted in Two phases, Sessional and End sem. The syllabus is usually finished within time and students get enough time to prepare for the exams so it doesn't get very hectic.
Other: Fergusson College is one of the best colleges in India to study Science. I've always wanted to get into the college cause it is a brand in itself. After finishing my 12th with PCB as my subject group, I applied for B.Sc. and got selected on the basis of my 12th score. The college has an independent registration process. The registration forms are released just after 2-3 days of HSC result declaration and admission process usually gets over within a month. Admission is usually done without any hassle and everything is done online.

B.Sc. in Geology - Batch of 2021

It's an affordable college. It depends on what you need and expects from the college.
Placements: I am currently pursuing B.Sc in geology final year, and we don't have any placements. In the last year, there were a few common placements for all the third-year students, which are not related to their respective subjects. But this year, we don't even have placements. Maybe there are placements for M.Sc students or other subjects, but I don't know about them.
Infrastructure: The classrooms here are spacious but kind of dusty with old benches. There is a library, but we only have access to a small area like 30%-40% of the area in the library. Wi-Fi is available near the main building with average speed. Labs have old and outdated equipment, and the geology lab has a lot of rocks, minerals and fossils. There is a small museum in our department. I don't stay in the hostel, so I don't know much about it. But the girls' hostel has a lot of restrictions, and the building is old as well.
Faculty: There are teachers who are very helpful and teach well. But other teachers have very little knowledge about the subject and don't know how to teach. Even a few teachers occasionally speak in Marathi, which is kind of annoying since a lot of students are non-Marathi speakers. The course curriculum is vast and is actually helpful.
Other: There are grant-in-aid courses in our college, which are very affordable. The campus is always crowded, and people outside the college visit as well for walking or for entertainment or for absolutely no reason. There are a lot of dogs and pigeons on the campus. There are also pigs nearby Fergusson hill. Only one fest is organised a year which lasts for a week or two weeks.

The college has very good facilities and great infrastructure.
Placements: As per geology is concerned, most of the jobs are allotted to students with a master degree. Students from our batch made it to IITs through IIT JAM. TOP recruiting companies are Schlumberger, TCS, TOM, Thermax, MOIL, ONGC and Reliance. Almost 50-60% of the students got internships in reputed organisations like Geological Survey Of India, GSDA, CWPRS, PRL and ONGC. Top roles offered are geologist, mudlogger, geophysicist and GIS specialist.
Infrastructure: The college provides excellent labs, independent departmental library, spacious classrooms, and the whole campus is Wi-Fi enabled. Hostels, mess and canteen, are well-maintained. It is declared as a national heritage site, as it also has a legacy of Veer Savarkar and many freedom fighters.
Faculty: Faculty members of our college are knowledgeable and highly qualified with excellent teaching quality. As geology is more of a field-based subject, field visits are arranged once per year, which is compulsory for every geology student, and a rich geological site is fixed to visit.
Other: I have chosen this course because geology is a combination of mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics, and it is field-based with a vast arena of application. Hence choosing this subject is a great opportunity to get a wide exposure. The syllabus can be improved as the time has changed, and many amendments have been made in several things. The best thing about Fergusson is college fests. It has the best crowd of Pune, and the campus is very joyful along with all students and staff members.

The national heritage of India, Fergusson College.
Placements: ONGC, Reliance and many more multinational companies came during my period. For my seniors, Google was one among the companies to look out for the students of our college. The highest number of placements in a class of 46 was 13. The students were the volunteers and organisers of the events.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure of our college is about 136 years old, but still, the buildings are very strong, and it fits exactly the description of what the college being a national Heritage should be. There is a separate Wi-Fi for the department with a speed of 4 Mbps. The classrooms are coloured time to time. The food availability is cheap with respect to the students and also attracts students from nearby colleges viz. BMCC and MMCC. The department of geology also has one of the most famous museums in the department with various rare and uncommon rocks and structures in the country.
Faculty: I think that the department of geology is the best with the staff, all equipped with knowledge and degrees of qualifications. Geology is a subject which comes under earth sciences and has a lot of scope ahead. The teachers are very helpful. Teaching methods included verbally, through PPTs and also field visits in and around the region. The course curriculum is the best as compared to other colleges in the state. The college ranks 2nd for the study of geology in the country.
Other: There are lots of activities and fests conducted, with regards to each department. Every department conducts their own fest. Events throughout the college such as traditional day, tie and saree day and many other days are organised. There are lectures and seminars of well-renowned personalities of the country and even scientists. The college is well known for its academic and extracurricular activities.

Fergusson college - The correct and current review.
Placements: The placements for geology students did not happen. But, syllabus of geology is pretty good that if anybody from the college is out for the job, then he'll place. I don't know about the internships that got from the college. But, some of my seniors had done in IIT Bombay and IISC etc.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is good in the college. All departments have got their separate Wi-Fi which we can use. College provides the Wi-Fi facility up to 7-8 Mbps speed and also has a computer lab with good internet facility. Sports facility is fantastic and can access from gymkhana, and can play a variety of games such as cricket, basketball, table tennis, badminton, etc. The college has huge and well-equipped ground and gym. There are about two canteens available, i.e. Fergusson college canteen and IMDR canteen. I'll prefer IMDR canteen as they have very good hygiene and tasty food. You must try the misal pav and dabeli in the canteen. The hostel rooms are sufficient for a single student and allowed single room for one student. College provides you with the iron bed and table chair.
Faculty: The faculty in geology department are intelligent, helpful, and have practical knowledge. The faculty members are approachable and don't mind you asking doubts about any mineral or rock you found nearby or any doubt in that case. The classrooms had an inbuilt projector and used for teaching and other guest lecturers. Approximately there is about one teacher per 50 students. The faculty members here worked in the mines and had really good industrial knowledge. They even provide a guide for research.
Other: Now the college got the autonomy and is improving the syllabus different from the University. In our college, they mostly focused on the industrial exposure, current scopes, and other competitive exams such as GSI. You get very good experience with the Mama in the college.

Very good college because of its reputation, faculty and infrastructure.
Placements: There are no placements after graduation as most of the students do masters after their graduation. However, the college has a very good reputation, and it helps very much to attend interviews. Sometimes, internships along with a good stipend are provided through our college.
Infrastructure: The Fergusson college has a very old infrastructure with a natural environment which keeps us cool. It has a large playground, an amphitheatre, a reading hall, and also spacious labs. We have a separate building for each department, and the college has very good canteens.
Faculty: The Fergusson college has got very good, helpful, and qualified faculty members. The teaching methods are also very good in our college. They are very friendly and regularly interact with students.

Other: If you are dedicated and want to bank on every opportunity you get then this is the best place for you. The department of Geology provides you with ample opportunities to shape your career in the right direction. The department hosts eminent teachers who have years long research experience and are exceptional as field geologists. Syllabus is well drafted and modern and advanced topics covered. You do get a student organization of the department the Geology Association which has been working for decades to promote and propagate Geological interest among students. You enter the college as a student and walk out as a geologist for sure.

Fergusson college a legacy worth been part of.
Placements: I am in a B.Sc. Course for geology for no scope for placement but other courses like computer Science do have placement the average in heard was 4 LPA like tcs and Wipro, internship start from 3rd year we have to do that on our own but they assist with permission and all that.
Infrastructure: My course for geology is very interesting and field work is very important I can even brag that geology professors are some of the coolest people I know. We get regular field trip every single year from 1 day to 1 week trip anywhere in the country, we have some of the best specimens of rocks source from Poland to Australia donated by ex students. Geology department is the 2nd the oldest in our whole country after BHU.
Faculty: Teachers are all qualified everyone has doctorate and experience in there respective specializations, very helpful. The curriculum has been updated by per the NEP guidelines but in the end it's us how have to study and gain knowledge. The end sem exams weren't as difficult I would say if we study and read the notes provided by professors we can pass with flying colors.
Other: I loved nature and earth since young age so naturally I was drawn towards geology also these might be the only Good college offering geology in Maharashtra with good infrastructure. We have a departmental fest called flint where we compete against fellow batchmates or Students from other colleges in pictionary, poster making, debate, minerals display for prizes and learning.

The latest cutoff for B.Sc at Fergusson college is 90-95 percent in order to get a seat in college in a B.sc course if you are from outside Maharashtra and if you are from within the state then you can expect a seat in 70-75 percentage.
