Review of B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing in IIT DHARWAD.

Placements: Placements are like, good when compared to other colleges but are like, kind of average when compared to top IITs and NITs. As the placement record of math and computing is not available, the first batch would pass out in 2025, but as the curriculum is the same as CSE, you may expect the same median and average packages of it. Companies would be like technical ones and the additional finance companies.

Infrastructure: This college is situated in Dharwad, which is well known for its weather. You will have a good experience and the campus is large and surrounded by forest. We have good infrastructure and a good library but the number of copies of books is quite low, but the wifi network is excellent. Food is also good. Sports ground is currently unavailable; one should visit the old campus and have access over there.

Faculty: Of course all the teachers are well qualified and knowledgeable; they help us in building our career and the curriculum of math and computing is quite similar to CSE with additional math courses and will have a lot of electives. The exams are moderate and almost all get passed.

I am fully satisfied with the faculty and staff. Really good infrastructure and facilities.

Placements: My branch was previously in CSE department so about 75% of students were placed. The highest package is approximately 75 lakhs. The top recruiters are Google, Amazon, Groww, Infosys, Paytm and many more. About 87% of students get internship in my course at M&C. Finance and consulting, machine learning, group analysis., etc. are the top roles offered.

Infrastructure: Yes, Wi-Fi is there in hostels with 5G facilities. The classroom is high-tech, with projectors and good speakers. We can enjoy joyful learning over there. The hostel has Wi-Fi, a common area, washing machines, indoor sports facilities, a newspaper section, R.O. waters both hot and cold and many more. The quality of food is good. Medical facilities is good and one ambulance is always there for hostel.

Faculty: The teachers are very helpful and well qualified. Teaching quality is best. Yes, curriculum is relevant, but biology is there in the first semester. Semester exams are difficult. The pass percentage depends upon SPI. Extracurricular activities are there. They do make students ready for industry for good placements. A career development cell is there.

Other: I chose it because this course is based upon finance analogies. More focus is needed on pure engineering. Yes, events are there. No scholarship for general students.

This institute rooms need improvement in various aspects.

Placements: The placement statistics have been improving, but they still have some way to go. Last year (2023), the CSE department had a placement percentage of around 70%, and the median package for that department was approximately 18 LPA. The average CTC in LPA was around 21. However, the placement rate has considerably increased after the COVID pandemic.

Infrastructure: As all the hostels and classrooms are newly built, everything looks great. However, there have been instances where some basic necessities, such as Wi-Fi, were unavailable for hours due to internet breakdowns, and there were 3–4 instances where there was no power for 1-2 consecutive days.

Faculty: Most of the faculty for the first year are newly recruited, and they are young. All the instructors hold a minimum degree of Ph.D. The course curriculum and teaching are of high quality. Instructors are very polite to the students and clarify their doubts with great enthusiasm. Grading is given on a relative or absolute basis, based on the scores of the students in the exams. IIT Bombay is the mentor institute of this IIT.

Other: Starting from the 2022 batch, students are residing in the new permanent campus (PC), located 3 km away from the transmit campus (WALMI). While transportation to the transmit campus is very convenient, it can be challenging to travel the remaining 3 km to the permanent campus. However, the institute provides buses frequently to and from WALMI to PC. WALMI is approximately 10 km from Dharwad. Transportation in and around Dharwad for outsiders is made easy with the BRTS buses. This IIT is ranked 1 among all the 23 IITs in the aspect of best climate.
