What is AFCAT Exam?

The Air Force Common Admission Test or AFCAT is conducted by the IAF to select Class-I Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties (Technical and Non-Technical). The exam is held twice a year, in February and August/September, respectively. AFCAT is one of the most sought-after defence exams where lakhs of candidates appear to join the Air Force Academy. To ace the AFCAT exam, candidates must prepare well by going through the exam pattern, syllabus, previous year question papers, and mock tests.

AFCAT is a gateway for both male and female candidates who wish to join the Indian Air Force for both Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent Commission/Short Service Commission in Ground Duties for both Technical and Non-Technical roles.

Cleared Sections A and B of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate membership examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies with 60 per cent in disciplines specified by the examination authority

Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical)

Candidates must have passed Class 12 with 60 per cent in Physics and Mathematics and degree/integrated post-graduation in Engineering/Technology

Or,

Cleared sections A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies with minimum 60 per cent or equivalent in certain disciplines specified by IAF

Accounts Branch

Candidates must have passed Class 12 and completed graduation in any of the following streams with 60 per cent or equivalent from a recognized university:

1) B Com Degree (Min three years course).
2) Bachelor of Business Administration (with specialization in Finance)/Bachelor of Management Studies (with specialization in Finance)/ Bachelor of Business Studies (with specialization in Finance)
3) Qualified CA/ CMA/ CS/ CFA
4) B Sc with specialization in Finance

Education

Passed Class 12 and Post-Graduation with 50 per cent in any discipline including integrated courses offering PG (Single degree without permission to exit and lateral entry) and with 60 per cent in Graduation in any discipline

AFCAT Exam Pattern 2025

AFCAT Exam Pattern is such that it is divided into online tests and AFSB tests. All registered candidates are required to appear for the online test. The test comprises questions from General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, and Military Aptitude Test. The EKT, which is conducted for the Technical branch candidates, comprises questions from Mechanical, Computer Science, and Electrical & Electronics.

The maximum marks allotted to AFCAT are 300. The test paper of EKT carries a total of 150 marks. The AFSB test is conducted in three stages. The first stage comprises Officer Intelligence Rating Test, Picture Perception Test, and Discussion Test, the second stage includes Psychological Test, Group Tests, and Interview. Candidates applying for the flying branch are required to appear in the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS).

The final merit list is prepared based on the performance in the online exam and AFSB Interview. All candidates are placed in the order of merit on the basis of total marks secured in the online test and AFSB Interview. The structure of AFCAT exam pattern is given below.

AFCAT Marking Scheme

IAF prescribes the marking scheme for AFCAT exam. The marks of candidates are calculated as per the marking scheme. The marking scheme of AFCAT exam is given below:

For correct answer, candidates score three marks
For incorrect answer, one mark is deducted
No marks are deducted for unattempted questions
Normalisation of marks is done to calculate the scores of candidates

Normalisation of Marks

AFCAT exam is conducted on multiple days and shifts. Normalisation of marks is done to adjust the difficulty level of the question paper. This process helps in maintaining transparency in the calculation of scores. In order to rationalise the marks scored by candidates appearing in different shifts objectively through a statistical method, normalisation scheme is being implemented as per the formula.
