JNU PhD admission and selection process

JNU PhD admission 2020 is primarily based on a Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted by the University. CSIR/UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) qualified candidates are, however, exempted from the test and are directly called for an Interview round. JNU PhD programme is offered in numerous specialisations via 16 schools and centres, as listed below:

JNU PhD Eligibility Criteria 2020

The eligibility criteria required to qualify for admission to JNU’s PhD programme is mentioned below:

  • A PhD aspirant must hold a Master's degree/ MPhil course work with at least 55 per cent aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed)
  • PG holders of AYUSH related subjects are also eligible to apply

JNU PhD Admission Process 2020

The candidates are admitted on the basis of their performance in the CBT. The candidates who qualify minimum 50 per cent marks for General Category and 45 per cent marks for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PWD category in the Computer Based Test (CBT) shall be called for viva-voce examination. Merit lists are prepared for each category i.e. candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC, PWD categories separately and on the basis of performance of candidates in the total aggregate marks (CBT + Viva-voce).

Admission of JRF holders

Only those candidates who fulfil the minimum eligibility requirements as prescribed in the brochure and have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship through CSIR/UGC NET examination are eligible to apply separately. Such candidates are required to appear for an interview and their selection will be based on their performance in the interview.

Candidates who have appeared in the CSIR/UGC NET examination but results are awaited may also apply. However, such candidates will be interviewed upon submission of a valid proof of having qualified for or awarded the JRF certificate at the time of interview.

Note: Candidates who have been awarded “Lectureship” in the CSIR/UGC examination are not eligible and will not be interviewed.

JNU PhD Application Process 2020

Candidates can apply to JNU via online as well as offline mode. Both modes of application are mentioned below:

Online Application:

  • Candidates can register for admission to PhD programme by filling an online application form available at the official website of the university
  • Application fee of Rs 300 is required to be submitted along with completed application form via online payment modes such as net banking, credit/ debit card, etc.

Offline Application:

  • Candidates can request the university officials to send the application form by post along with the prospectus by sending Crossed Demand Draft of Rs 300 along with the self-addressed envelope
  • DD should be drawn in the favour of "Jawaharlal Nehru University", payable at New Delhi and the letter should clearly indicate the programme of study for which the application form is required
  • The duly filled-in application along with the copies of all the necessary enclosures should reach through registered post/ speed post at the following address:

Enclosures:

  1. Two self-attested copies of the Matriculation, Higher Secondary Pre-University of Indian School Certificate or Senior School Certificate (10+2) or an equivalent examination certificate, showing the age/date of birth of the candidate
  2. A Character Certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended
  3. Two self-attested copies of the statement of marks obtained by the candidate in Senior School or their equivalent examination
  4. SC/ST/OBC Certificate, if belonging to SC/ST/OBC category
  5. A Medical Certificate for PWD Candidates certifying nature & percentage of disability issued by the competent medical authority
  6. Migration Certificate (in original) from the Head of the Institution/ University last attended
