Sumit Kumar Gupta, AILET 2017 Rank 10

Sumit Kumar Gupta secured Rank 10 in AILET 2017 with a score of 94/150. However, that is not his only achievement because this young lad also managed to achieve Rank 4 in CLAT 2017 by securing an impressive 147.5/196 marks. However, Sumit very candidly shares that Law was not his first choice. A student of Sainik School, Sumit wanted to make a career in the Defence Forces. However, when he analysed his strengths, he found out that law was also a good choice for him.

While most law aspirants aspire to secure admission in National Law Universities (NLUs) such as NLSIU Bangalore or NLU Delhi but Sumit had his eyes set on The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) and went on to secure admission in it as well.

Shiksha spoke to Sumit to understand his study plan as well as books he went through to prepare for AILET exam. Go through the detailed interview below to know prep strategy followed by Rank 10 holder of the law entrance exam.

Q. Did you take any coaching for AILET?

A.

I took correspondence course from CLAT PATH of Patna and took multiple test series such as Career launcher, Legal Edge, Clataholic and CLAT Bulls Eye.

Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam? Any advice for AILET aspirants.

A.

My prep strategy was simple. I followed the trend of the previous years’ question papers and formed an opinion and went ahead with my preparation. For example, the questions of Mathematics section are tough so I started from the basics, went on to clear my concepts and then solved tough questions.

For English I relied on the elementary level preparation i.e. upto class 10 grammar and then focused on improving my vocabulary, reading comprehension skills etc.

For Legal Aptitude, I read the coaching material and cleared my concepts. Also, afterwards I practiced as many questions as I could. I would also suggest that in legal aptitude you need to stick to the principle given. Do not, I repeat, do not deviate from the principle given.

For Logical Reasoning, you can rely on coaching material and try to get your concepts clearer. Again you need to practice various types of questions so that you have knowledge on how to solve different types of questions.

For Static GK, if your schooling is good then it won't be a huge problem. Apart from that you need to focus on UN related questions because every year questions are asked from this topic.

For Current Affairs, I advise you to follow GKTODAY and other online portals. Try to maintain a copy in which you jot down daily current affairs. Also, monthly magazines and other coaching material will help you in current affairs.

Q. How should aspirants deal with their strengths and weaknesses while preparing for the exam?

A.

First of all, I suggest that aspirants should take a mock test and analyse their performance. Jot down their weaknesses and strengths and start working on it. One should spend slightly more time on their weak areas but nonetheless never forget their strengths. Try to make perfect balance between them. Try to clear their concepts related to their weak areas and start solving all types of questions.

Q. Did you refer any books for the exam?

A.

For English, I read Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis and Objective English by S Chand publication. I also read Wren and Martin to learn the basics.

For Maths, I read Quantitative Mathematics by RS Aggarwal.

For Logical Reasoning, I read Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by Arihant publication.

For Legal Aptitude, I relied on coaching materials.

Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take AILET exam next year?

A.

Tips for students appearing next year is that AILET is a tough exam to crack and so they need to have a time table in place and follow it religiously. Aspirants should cover all the topics at hand and solve mock tests regularly to determine their strength areas and their weaknesses.

You need to appear for and qualify in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which is the primary entrance exam for most NLUs; ensure you meet the eligibility criteria of a completed bachelor's degree, then apply to your preferred NLU based on your CLAT score during the counselling process.
