Speaking in a GD is good while giving others the chance to speak helps in achieving scores. Be a good listener and make relevant points are also considered while judging a participant in a GD.

Group Discussion (GD) plays an important role in selection and recruitment. Group discussion also helps in improving communication skills, confidence and knowledge. GD also helps in enhancing the ability to convince other people. Many students speak well, however, are unable to crack GD as they are not aware of the right conduct, body language and the proper way to put their point forward during GD. Good communication skills are not enough for selection. The judges often check the knowledge, point related to the topic and convincing capability of each participant.

Important parameters on which you are judged in a group discussion

  • Knowledge about a given topic – Every participant should have relevant points related to topic backed with good examples to score high in a GD.
  • Body language and positive attitude - The body language and positive attitude during the GD are also important factors that are considered by the judges. The selection team often checks the body language of the candidate and their gestures during the discussion. The overall conduct body should be relaxed and calm. Make eye contacts with all the other participants while speaking.
  • Communication skills – Effective communication skill are important in a group discussion. The candidate must have an impressive way to convince others. They should pronounce each word clearly and speak fluently. The candidate should put their point loud and clear in a polite manner.
  • Presentation skills - Presentation of thoughts is also a very important parameter in a GD. Always keep in mind that there should be a proper flow while presenting each point in front of the group
  • Listening skills - With speaking, listening also plays an important role in a GD. Effective listening often helps in adding more ideas and presenting it from a different angle. This further helps in learning and understanding different point of views from other candidates. Active listening always keeps the candidate alert and aware.
  • Leadership skills - Leadership is one of the impressive skills on which candidates have the most chance to get selected in a GD. Ability to take the leadership role and inspire others is a big talent. Every candidate could try to showcase their leadership skills during the GD.
