Kerala University to upgrade Kariavattom Campus as centre of excellence
Kerala University has decided to upgrade its Kariavattom Campus as the centre of excellence, which includes construction of modern classrooms and 24-hour library with digital facilities.
This year, a budget of Rs 300 crore has been allotted for development of Kariavattom Campus.
Finance committee convener K H Babujan announced recently that the government will provide fund from Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) for the project.
The proposal of development plan will be submitted to KIIFB. Along with modern facilities like high-tech classroom, seminar halls, 24-hour digital library and upgraded hostel, the campus will get a heritage village called ‘Kerala Gramam’ and a botanical garden. The heritage village will be set up to mark the 60th anniversary of state formation.
A chancellor's multiplex having heritage museum, digital centre, wellness centre, start-up centre, international centre and amphitheatre will also be constructed on the campus. Rs 5 crore Chancellor's Award will be used for this purpose.
Babujan further revealed that the district information centres at Kollam, Alappuzha and Panthalam will be upgraded as regional facilitation centres, in order to facilitate students in availing all the services presently available at Palayam Campus.
Other facilities in the pipeline are mineral resource laboratory for geology department, advanced nanophotonics laboratory for opto electronics department, Raman spectrometer for physics department, biodiversity conservation centre for botany department, computerization of exam sections.
The university also plans to organize an international university summit where student leaders from international universities will be invited to participate.
