KCET Counselling 2024: Engineering Seat-Blocking Scam Under Scrutiny

KCET Counselling 2024: The State government is considering a probe committee for the alleged engineering seat-blocking scam, after KEA flagged 12 students who sought this year’s CET counselling despite being barred.
The State government is considering forming a committee to investigate an alleged engineering seat-blocking scam. The issue came to light when 12 students, barred from this year’s CET counselling for failing to join colleges after securing seats last year, approached the KEA to participate in the counselling process.
According to reports, H. Prasanna, Executive Director of the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), is set to submit a preliminary report to the Minister, after which the department will determine the next steps in the investigation.
A preliminary investigation has uncovered that multiple students used the same IP address to select seats, and the mobile numbers provided were either fake or incorrect. Notably, these activities were limited to two engineering institutions: New Horizon College of Engineering and BMS College of Engineering.

Engineering Seat-Blocking Scam
Despite being allotted seats in the second extended round of KCET 2024, a total of 2,348 candidates did not pay the fee or report to their respective engineering colleges. Many of these unclaimed seats were in top engineering colleges and high-demand streams like computer science, raising red flags.
The KEA issued show-cause notices to these students via email, but many of the emails bounced back. Additionally, the mobile numbers provided by the students were found to be either fake or incorrect. As a result, the KEA has now sent postal notices to their residential addresses. “We will wait seven days for a response from the students before taking further action,” stated Mr. Prasanna.
Even in COMEDK, at least 18 students used the same mobile number to select seats, prompting COMED-K authorities to contact the Admission Overseeing Committee for Professional Courses to request an inquiry into the matter.
