The modes of Gauhati University course admissions are online and offline. Admission to various courses is based on merit and entrance exam scores. The cut off changes every year. In general, the basic eligibility criteria involves passing Class 12 with a minimum of 40% to 55% aggregate (depending on the selected course). For postgraduate courses, the basic eligibility criteria involves pass in bachelor's course with a minimum of 45%-60% aggregate (depending on the selected course). The accepted entrance exams are MAT,  CMAT,  CAT,  CMAT, and others.

Established in 1948, Guwahati University is accredited with A Grade by NAAC and is approved by UGC and AICTE. It has over 302 colleges and various departments. It offers UG, PG, diploma, and various other courses in Arts, Law, Science, Management, Engineering, and various other streams.

Guwahati University offers 100+ UG, PG Diploma Certificate and doctoral courses. Additionally, it also has 340+ affiliated colleges that offer UG and PG courses in the faculty members of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, and Engineering. It also has an Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) to offer distance learning programmes to the students. Gauhati University admission process is completely online; for all PG courses, it is subject to candidates' performance in the Offline Entrance Test, conducted by the university. For a few courses, such as BTech and MBA, it also accepts national/state-level entrance exams for admission like JEE Main, GATE, and others. Candidates must study the GATE exam pattern, attempt GATE question papers, and hence prepare well in advance for admission.

Gauhati University recognises both state and central board scores for admission into the BSc programme. Some of the boards include CBSE, AHSEC, ISCE, ISC etc. Candidates can apply for admission at the university if they have secure a minimum aggregate of 40% from a state or central recognised board. The admission into the programme take place through the CUET-UG entrance exam. So, Candidates will have to appear for that exam once they have cleared their Class 12.
