At the doctoral level, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) offers PhD programme across 42 disciplines at the university which includes Science, Engineering, Technology, Management and Hospitality areas. Check out all 42 PhD specialisations & their admission details. Admission to PhD is subject to RET conducted by MAKAUT. However, applicants who have cleared UGC-NET (including JRF)/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/ GATE/ teacher fellowship holder or have passed MPhil or passed the MPhil/ ME/ MTech/ MD/ MPharm or equivalent can apply directly without RET. However, all students have to go through a mandatory interview round for final selection.

MAKAUT PhD Admission 2025: Eligibility, Selection & Fee

At the doctoral level, MAKAUT also offers PhD programme across 42 specialisations to the students. All details around PhD admission are as follows:

Selection: Based on Research Entrance Exam (RET) conducted by the University + PI
Exemption: Those who have cleared UGC NET (including JRF)/ CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/ GATE/ teacher fellowship holder or those with MPhil or passed MPhil/ ME/ MTech/ MD/ MPharm or equivalent examinations can apply directly. For such candidates, the selection is interview-based.
Eligibility: A pass in master’s degree, such as MPhil/ ME/ MTech/ MD/ MPharm or equivalent with 70% aggregate or 7.5 CGPA + candidate should be less than 30 years of age as on date of admission (5 years of age relaxation is there for SC/ ST/ women and physically challenged candidates)
Application fee: INR 500
Other fees: Admission fee is INR 6,000 | Thesis submission fee is INR 19,500 | Enrolment interview: INR 2,000
Number of fellowships offered: 9
Duration of fellowship: 3 years (further one-year extension is given)
Fellowship amount: The fellowship amount is INR 31,000 per month for the first two years followed by INR 35,000 per month for the third year. A contingency grant will be admissible to the scholars at the rate of INR15000 per annum to meet the miscellaneous expenditures.

Q: Can I join MAKAUT University without JEE?

No, admission to MAKAUT is based on entrance exams for courses such as BTech. Candidates wanting to get admission to MAKAUT for BTech must qualify West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) exam and WBJEE Counselling. Those willing to get admission in the second year must appear for JELET (for Lateral Entry). MAKAUT also accepts JEE Main exam for BTech admission.

Q: How can I get admission in MAKAUT?

MAKAUT University accepts both merit and entrance based exam scores. The university conducts CET exam in June for admission to courses such as BSc, MSc, BBA and BCA courses. MAKAUT conducts JEMAT for admission to MBA and MHA courses. It also accepts a few other state/ national-level entrance exams such as WBJEE, PGET, UGC NET (including JRF)/ CSIR NET for admission to UG, PG and doctoral-level programmes.

Candidates can visit the official website and fill out the application form. Appear for the entrance exam mentioned above and wait for the merit list to get released. Lastly, shortlisted candidates will be eligible for counselling.

Q: What are the minimum marks required in order to get into a decent branch at the MAKAUT colleges?

MAKAUT WBJEE cutoff 2025 was released based on the WBJEE entrance exam, followed by the WBJEE counselling result.

To get into a decent branch like CSE, a General AI category student would need to attain a rank of at least 98815 or below. For the BTech ECE branch, the same category students would need a rank of at least 98845 or preferably below to gain a seat at any MAKAUT colleges.

Note: This is the minimum rank required for the aforementioned branches and category; other specialisations, courses, quotas, etc, will have different cutoffs.

Q. Which entrance exam should I write for PhD admission at MAKAUT?

A. The university conducts RET, i.e. Research Entrance Exam for admission to PhD. However, those who have qualified UGC NET (including JRF)/ CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/ GATE/ teacher fellowship holder or those with MPhil or passed MPhil/ ME/ MTech/ MD/ MPharm or equivalent examinations can apply directly. For such candidates, the selection is interview-based. While for all the other candidates, the interview is a compulsory round after RET.

A. Yes, the fellowship amount is INR 31,000 per month for the first two years followed by INR 35,000 per month for the third year. A contingency grant will be admissible to the scholars at the rate of INR 15,000 per annum to meet the miscellaneous expenditures. A total of nine fellowships are offered with a duration of three years. Further, an year's extension is given to the candidates for completion of the course.
